About Sarah

All ages and levels welcome. With more than twelve years of experience teaching students of all ages and levels EFL/ESL, I have taught almost every kind of English including: conversational, test prep (IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, OPIC), business, travel, medical, Accent Clinic, grammar, job interview and resumé, grad school prep, and more. Having worked in the greater Montréal area and the competitive education powerhouse of Gangnam, Seoul, no challenge is too big for me as I work with students to achieve their learning goals. I lived in Korea for eight years and received the Five year Pagoda employee award (2016), the Best Teacher Award – PagodaONE Gangnam Branch (2016), and the Teacher of the Year award – Seoul Area (2013) from the Korean Association of Foreign Language Academies. I offer a very personalised and unique language learning experience that incorporates a variety of materials, and includes feedback, explicit and implicit instruction, and practise for language mastery. I have a Bachelor's Degree with a double major in Religion, Theology, and French, and a minor in English Writing, a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certificate, and a Diploma as an Intervenor for Deafblind Persons.

My motto is, “Learning through relationships.”
I use a variety of techniques to motivate students and help them develop language proficiency, combining free-talking and implicit learning through corpora (real-world text and videos) with structured, explicit learning (grammar, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions). In class, we use resources that are based on the student’s learning needs and interests, such as sports or movies, and each class is as unique as the student. My passion is developing innovative learning methods, so this part gets really creative. Just pretend the webcam isn’t there, because we are going to get out and explore the world together. When students make mistakes, I encourage them to figure out what the mistake is themselves, so they are able to apply what they have studied. If they don’t know what is wrong, I explain what mistake they made, and the vocabulary or grammar principles that apply. Then, I ask the student yes/no and information questions to get them to practise their sentence, and get them to ask me questions, so they don’t just say, “I understand,” and continue to make the same mistake. I type notes of the incorrect and correct sentences for comparison, which the student can review. We can use these notes to check the student’s progress. I generally don’t give tests or report cards, because I find that students are under a lot of pressure to study English, and I try to reduce their stress as much as possible. However, I can assess students using the Canadian Language Benchmarks or a testing method of their choice to help them develop realistic proficiency goals. My focus is on life-long language acquisition so you develop the skills you need for school, work, or proficiency tests, as well as everyday living.

Details

During COVID-19, I prefer to teach online.

** You get one free level assessment (introductions, you explain why you want to learn English and how you want to study, level assessment, practise with the technology required to do class), plus one free trial class. **

50-minute class: $27, 25-minute class: $15

Cancellation policy (updated on December 1, 2020):

Please cancel at least 24 hours before your class.

ex: If your class starts at 11:00AM on Tuesday, January 2, you have up to 11:00AM on Monday, January 1 to send me a message to cancel or change your class time.

The cancellation time is considered the time the student originally tried to phone text, message, or email the teacher, even if the teacher did not get the message right away. If the student attempts to contact the company less than 24 hours before (and at least one minute before) the class start time with an appropriate excuse, the class may be rescheduled within a one week (8-day) period (ex: If you cancel your class on January 1, you can reschedule the class until January 8. Therefore, you may have a class on January 8). If the student cancels less than 24 hours in advance and does not want to, or cannot, reschedule, it will be considered an “absence,” and will be charged at the full rate. No-shows (no appearance and no attempt to contact the teacher before the class start time) are considered “absent,” and will be charged the full amount.

TECHNICAL ISSUES: If there are numerous technical issues (on the teacher's part) that interrupt the class or prevent the class from happening, the class can go overtime, be rescheduled, or a complete refund will be provided (no matter how many minutes of class passed). If a teacher is late or absent to class without re-scheduling the class in advance, the number of minutes will be added to that class that day, or another class a different day. If the teacher is unable to fulfill the number of additional minutes, the student will receive a refund for the calculated number of remaining minutes.
