My teaching method is rooted in structured literacy, so my instruction is explicit, systematic, and intentional. I model skills clearly, provide guided practice, and use multisensory techniques to help concepts stick. I focus on building strong foundations in phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, and spelling, and I consistently encourage students to rely on strategies rather than guess.
A typical lesson follows a predictable structure. I begin with a brief phonemic awareness warm-up, move into direct instruction of a targeted phonics/spelling/grammar/reading skill, and then guide students through hands-on practice and decodable grade level reading. I always include a short spelling or writing component so students can apply the skill in both reading and encoding. While the structure remains consistent, I adapt the content, pacing, and complexity to fit both primary and intermediate grade levels.
What sets me apart as a tutor is how intentional and responsive my instruction is. I closely monitor student progress, provide immediate feedback, and adjust lessons to meet individual needs. I create a supportive learning environment that builds confidence while maintaining high expectations for growth.
These lessons are designed for elementary students across both primary and intermediate grades. They are especially effective for students who benefit from structured, explicit instruction, including struggling readers, students with learning differences, and those who need reinforcement to strengthen foundational literacy skills.

My son was one of Emily’s 4th grade students. Prior to 4th grade he never really liked to read. Emily’s love for reading and wonderful teaching skills changed all of that. She made reading fun and exciting for him! In fact, he went from having Level 2 (Apprentice: Indicates a basic, but not yet sufficient, understanding of content) scores on his standardized reading testing in 3rd grade to receiving an award for reading based on his High Level 3 (Proficient: Shows a firm, consistent understanding of the academic standards), almost Level 4 (Distinguished: Demonstrates a comprehensive, superior understanding of the material) scores!
We are so grateful for Emily’s support and dedication to her students’ education! As a colleague, I've witnessed firsthand what a wonderful and effective teacher Emily is! She clearly explains content and has high expectations for her students, motivating them to want to learn and put in their best effort. She intentionally seeks out different resources and strategies to keep students engaged and makes learning enjoyable and rewarding for them. She has a gift for relating to students, meeting them where they're at, and helping them grow their talents and skills!
I have taught with Emily for several years. She is an amazing individual and an amazing educator. Emily works to determine what each scholar needs and then determines how to help them reach their full potential. Her students respect and love her! She knows that each student can be successful and will do anything she can to help them. She has high standards and makes learning fun. A passionate teacher who will help you/your child succeed!
