About Mikaela

During my undergraduate education I spent a year in a teaching internship where I shadowed multiple Biology Department Ph.D faculty across many biological disciplines. Throughout this internship year, I co-taught classroom lectures to undergraduate students and assisted in the development of inventive classroom activities. Following this experience, I was employed as a University of Iowa Teaching Assistant where I lead my own classroom lectures and laboratory, and partook in the transition from in-person to virtual learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

I further honed my teaching and communication skills during my graduate education by serving as a graduate tutor where I have found unique and creative ways to keep students engaged during a stressful and non-traditional time of virtual learning. I developed a virtual STEM talk education program with a local Chicago senior citizen organization to enhance quality of life in this community through holistically enriching the body, including the mind, which has now become a staple in virtual programming and student volunteering at this organization. I also continue to educate myself on ways to better engage and communicate with students of all backgrounds, to recognize and honor the value of each student in my classroom and colleagues with whom I work with, from their culture, training, education, and personal history.

About the lesson

I focus on integrated learning, connecting the content and skills students are learning in my classroom and in tutoring session to potential future careers in the health sciences and the world we live in as well as promote participation through student-based, individualistic learning. Every student learns different but my one hour lessons will be most helpful to students who are visual learners.
