About Vel

I am a neurodivergent, LGBTQ+ community member here to give a helping hand to anyone who needs it.

I'm still learning the ins and outs of my own ADHD, but the more I learn, the more I understand that certain things that feel like setbacks are actually powerful stepping stones. We might not think the same way, but how boring would the world be if we all thought the same?

I believe in fostering your own strengths, and approaching education in a way that doesn't feel constraining.

About the lesson

For me, creative writing has always been an outlet and a refuge. In my late 20s I was diagnosed with ADHD, and realised that a lot of my personal coping mechanisms, and ways of learning, were directly related to that. I was one of two students in NZ who got a 7 in higher level English in my graduating year, and I want to offer help and hope to anyone feeling like their ADHD or other neurodivergence is holding them back from their potential.

I'm offering tutoring in creative writing and basic story creation; including handy tools for overcoming personal obstacles when it comes to consistent writing, and realistic ways to develop a sustainable and enjoyable creative writing routine.

I'm also offering tutoring in speaking, pronunciation, and annunciation. I was the captain of my school's debate team for eight years, and an active member of the speech and drama club. As someone who once had a very real fear of public speaking, and found a way to overcome it and make the experience not only enjoyable but exciting, I'm hoping I can help others come out of their shell as well.

Lastly, I'm offering help with I.B. English. I completed my high school education in 2008, but the skills I acquired during my time in I.B. are ones I've found to be invaluable in life going forward. I'm confident in helping students prepare for essays, grow their skills with reading comprehension, and prepare for exams.

I feel my approach as a tutor with ADHD will help those who feel they are struggling with the school system that is not catered to their way of thinking realise that they can succeed, and will succeed, with the tools they have at their disposal. It just takes a little honing, as any super power does.
