I prefer to take some time to get to know my students first prior to our first session to get a better understanding of how to customize our lesson plans.
When I meet students for the very first time, I like to ask them questions about their interests, like sports, school subjects, music and movies. In the math problems, readings, or other lesson materials that I create, I incorporate references to these interests to keep the students engaged and interested.
I then create a personalized lesson-plan and schedule for our scheduled sessions to help achieve our goals. In each session, I briefly go over the agenda so that they know what to expect. I also typically give them a brief quiz to go over the previous sessions' topics and see what they remember and or where they may need additional work. After the review, I try to connect how those previous topics relate to what we're going over in the current session. I go through the lesson, which typically involves the student reading material aloud and discussing the prompts with me or answering math problems. I then use the bulk of the session to go into deep explanation of strategies and do some practice activities. Finally, I leave at least five minutes at the end of the session for any additional questions about the material.

Every Tutoring Session
1. Review Previous Work (5 minutes)
• Talk briefly about the skill worked on in the last session.
• Learn two new words and incorporate them in sentences.

CHOOSE A BOOK FOR STUDENT TO READ.
Before Reading:
• Look at the cover. Where do you think this story takes place?
• Look at a few pages. Who do you think the characters will be?
Set a purpose: Let’s read to find out the characters, setting, problem, events and solution in this story.
During Reading:
Stop at appropriate places and ask: Who are the characters?
Where is the setting?
What is the problem?
How is the problem getting solved so far? At the end, ask:
What was the solution to the problem?
After Reading:
TOGETHER: Discuss the story structure. I will write so the STUDENT can focus on content. Re-read the chart at the end.
