About Cody
I am recent year 12 graduate hopping to pursue a future career in engineering through university studies. As a recently graduated year 12 student from one of the most academically intense programs in the country I believe I have an understanding of the struggles students face both inside the classroom and outside the classroom that can effect their academic performance. I believe learning is a fundamental underpinning of our society, however many students feel disempowered to learn, whether this be from then feeling a lack of confidence in their abilities or a general disinterest in the course material. I think that by making the course material more intesting or presenting it in new and fun ways as well as making your students aware that you are backing them and fully in their corner the entire time is an important part of being a tutor. I also understand that whilst these things may impose a students in class performance it is important to also consider what is happening outside the classroom and common challenges that teens face to ensure I can tailor their tutoring experience to not just benefit them academically but as a whole person.

Usually I would begin by attempting to establish a baseline of the students understanding of a topic and gathering information on their goals for achievement in that subject. To gage their baseline I would usually ask them what areas they feel they most need assistance with, followed by presenting them with a range of easy and difficult questions around those areas to see how they attempted them. After this as the tutoring sessions progressed and we worked towards their term or semester goals, I would hold an in-depth study Session on a specific topic with practice questions. I would also create a warm up with questions from previous topics that the students had already covered to ensure that new content is being continually practiced. Furthermore to ensure the students didn’t get bored of completing the same style tutoring sessions every 4th or so session would be a more creative session where they would have an opportunity to present their knowledge in a more tangible and creative way. This would usually manifest in the form of flash cards, mind maps or simple games that could be created from the content.
