About Jeanne

Hello! Hola! Bonjour! Здравствуйте! Are you ready to take your English to the next level?

I would love to help you! My name is Jeanne (like a genie in a bottle) and I'm from Cleveland, OH, and I speak with a neutral American accent.

You can feel confident that my fifteen years of experience teaching ESL and pronunciation mean that you're in good hands. My Bachelor's degree is in Spanish and I have a Master's in Education with a Graduate Certificate in TESL plus a Certificate in PESL (or Pronouncing ESL.)
I've also trained as a nurse, and I was a small business owner, and now, I'm studying to be a yoga teacher, so my background is diverse. I love connecting with my students on a professional and personal level.
In addition, yo hablo español, et un peu de français, и я учу русский so I understand the challenge of mastering a foreign language.
My favorite area to teach is pronunciation and accent modification because you need to feel confident that people will understand you when you speak in English. I can also help you with grammar, presentation skills, writing emails, oral reading... and much more!
I like to have fun when I teach so that you can feel relaxed when learning and so learn faster.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up for some lessons and let's get started!

If you’ve been considering accent reduction lessons, you may be wondering what really happens in each session and how it can help improve your communication. I help you to make clear, noticeable changes so that you will be understood. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in each lesson.

1. Assessment:
During this first step, you’ll make a recording of yourself reading aloud through words, sentences, and a short paragraph. You’ll also speak freely for a couple of minutes. This initial assessment gives us insight into the sounds or speech patterns that might make you hardest to understand—or that are easiest to fix.

2. Lesson Structure:
Each lesson is structured to help you achieve success, which means that we may start by focusing on a particular sound. For example, if we’re working on the “V” sound, we’ll begin with practicing it alone to ensure accuracy. Once it feels comfortable, we’ll move to words, phrases, and sentences, gradually bringing it into conversational practice.

The broader concepts of melody, stress, intonation, reductions and linking are often taught within the context of the specific sounds. Therefore, it may feel like we’re working on several different things at once, although it’s always done in an incremental way, building one thing on top of another.

3. Visual Aids and Feedback:
During our sessions, I use visual aids like mouth diagrams to demonstrate the tongue, lip, and jaw positioning needed for each sound. I will model the sounds myself, or if we find a particular position in the word that works well, we’ll use that to build on. For example, if you can say the Tap T sound in butter, but can’t do it in the word meeting, then we’ll take baby steps to move from one word to the other.

To reinforce learning, I might also share video tutorials from other instructors. Sometimes, hearing a different perspective makes all the difference. For example, you might see a video explaining a sound in a new way, helping it “click” for you.

4. Practice Makes Perfect:
Real improvement in accent reduction relies heavily on practice between sessions. After each lesson, I’ll give you exercises based on what we worked on that day. This might include words, sentences, or even materials from your daily life, like a presentation or favorite news article. Many students also record themselves practicing and send audio clips to me for feedback.

5. Tracking Progress:
We’re constantly measuring progress. As we work together, we’ll revisit sounds to make sure you’re continuing to hit them correctly in conversation. Occasionally, we’ll listen to recordings from your original assessment to hear just how far you’ve come. This progress tracking not only keeps you on course but also highlights all your hard work, which can be a huge motivator.

6. Lesson Frequency:
Each session is typically 45 minutes, though students sometimes opt for 30- or 60-minute lessons depending on availability and preference. I recommend two sessions per week for the best progress, though once a week can work if you’re diligent with practice on your own. Either way, consistency is essential!

Most of my students are young international professionals living in the US, or working with Americans in their day to day employment.
