About Joy

I've been teaching ESOL & EFL for 15 years. I started out teaching ESOL to multilingual classes in FE colleges in London. I taught both adult groups and 16-19 year old groups. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know students from so many different countries and backgrounds. I especially loved seeing lower level students grow in confidence and progress in their English speaking.

My husband and I spent the last 5 years living and working in Lille, France. I worked for a language school (Berlitz) for 18 months, where I taught general English and business English to professionals. This was either 1-2-1 lessons or small group lessons. I then spent the next 18 months building up my business, teaching English to French people (and some other nationalities too!). I built up a good client base so that I was quite busy during my last 2 years in France! I taught children aged 3 - 18, giving lessons in the family home. I taught in a local primary school 2 afternoons per week, children aged 6-7. I also continued teaching adults. I enjoyed imparting a love of learning English to both young children and retired people!

About the lesson

I give lessons to learners of all ages (children, teenagers, adults) and all levels. My lessons are tailored to the student's goals, needs and interests. Whether you need help passing an exam, want to gain confidence in speaking fluently, need to develop your vocabulary and expressions in a business context or want to get to grips with English grammar, I can help you achieve your targets. I set homework after each lesson to provide further practice of what we cover in the lesson. It's up to you if you want to do it or not! - the more work you put in, the quicker you will progress! I use a variety of methods and materials. I always make sure the student talks more than the teacher! I don't need to practice speaking English but you do! I give opportunities for more controlled practice where you will be corrected on your errors. I also give time for you to develop your fluency skills where you can speak without interruption (and get feedback and correction after you have finished!). If there isn't a specific curriculum or exam that you are working on then I often use coursebooks like Headway or English File for adult learners. The advantage of working through these books is that they provide a systematic way of covering all the relevant grammar and vocabulary at your level as well as covering all 4 skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and pronunciation. However, there are also plenty of good resources online which I also use. Games are also a favourite of mine, whatever your level and age! They're a good way to put into practice new structures or vocabulary you've learned but in a more fun and relaxed way!
