About Seren

Hi, I'm Seren! I'm a first-year student at the University of British Columbia, where I've spent the past year developing strong academic writing and critical thinking skills through one of UBC's most rigorous interdisciplinary programs. I'm patient, friendly, and genuinely passionate about helping students find their footing in English — whether that's crafting a strong essay, breaking down a difficult text, or just building the confidence to express their ideas clearly. My sessions are relaxed but focused, and I'm committed to making sure every student walks away feeling more capable than when we started.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring English is rooted in meeting students where they are — I focus on building genuine understanding rather than just getting through material. I start every first session by identifying where a student is struggling, whether that's essay structure, literary analysis, grammar, or reading comprehension, and tailor my sessions around those specific gaps.
A typical lesson begins with reviewing any recent assignments or upcoming tasks the student has, followed by targeted skill-building exercises based on their needs. For essay writing, I walk students through the process step by step — from developing a thesis to structuring arguments and integrating evidence — using their actual assignments as practice material rather than generic examples. I also incorporate close reading exercises to help students learn how to analyze texts independently.
What sets me apart is that I just completed my first year at the University of British Columbia in the Coordinated Arts Program, an interdisciplinary program with a strong emphasis on academic writing and critical thinking. Everything I teach is fresh — I recently worked through the same skills my students are developing, so I understand exactly where the difficulty lies and how to explain concepts clearly.
My lessons are best suited for high school students in grades 9–12 who want to strengthen their essay writing, literary analysis, reading comprehension, or general English skills. I am also comfortable helping students prepare for English exams or work through specific assignments they are struggling with.
