I have a BA degree in English Literature & Creative writing, a Master Screenwriter Certificate, decades of experience as a technical writer & classroom teacher, and seven years of experience as a serious screenwriter. One of my screenplays was a semi-finalist in the Page International Screenwriting Competition. I wrote a screenplay adaptation of a novel -- THE MOON'S WIFE by internationally acclaimed writer A.A. Attanasio -- and I am currently adapting my latest screenplay as a novel. I am also an independent filmmaker and professional performance videographer. I believe in a hands-on practical approach to learning any subject, especially reading and writing. Language is best learned and mastered by practice -- reading good writing and then writing your own thoughts and feelings about what you have read. Unless teaching literature per se-- as opposed to teaching effective reading, I would encourage students to read fiction and non-fiction that interests them. As a child, I taught myself to read by studying my older sibling's comic books! Guided editing & rewriting is an especially effective way to practice and learn.
