About Sowmya
I teach as per student needs and requirements. I have taught a wide range of age groups and I fully understand and recognize that each of us has a body type that is unique to us. It is important to tailor our practice to suit our body's abilities and needs. I modify postures as per clients' requirements. All those I have taught have truly appreciated that I have created a learning environment paced to the nature of the clients' needs. I ensure we all make progress at our own pace.
What I do is as beneficial, relaxing and healthy a practice for anyone who practices with me as it is for me. So working becomes a real joy. I enjoy customizing the Yoga practice to suit varying needs accross age ranges. That keeps it challenging, interesting and engaging for me as a teacher too.
200 hours certified Yoga instructor - certification in 2011 from Yoga Institute of Houston.

Identify, along with the student what they're looking for in the short and long run and what they'd like me to focus on - flexibility, strength, balance, etc
Student age, prior surgeries, injuries, pre-natal Yoga, post natal Yoga, Yoga for athletes and dancers -I take all of this into consideration while designing a class for a student. I recommend several posture modifications based on all the above information.
Focus on breath work which is integral to Yoga - the basic breath work is universal and I definitely focus on that.
I incorporate stretching, strengthening, balance, core work, upper body work, and some inversion (there are several modifications for this), in almost every session.
Every teacher is different and it may take a few classes to figure out which teacher might best suit your needs. Try at least a couple of classes before deciding whether or not the teacher is a good fit for you.
Yoga teachers must instruct the class on 'breath work' -specific breathing instructions are an integral part of Yoga exercises and postures. How to breathe, the Ujjayi breath, what kind of breathing are we about to do now, and how can we use the breath to enable us to deepen the stretch, enhance the posture, improve our focus and enable us to hold a balance postion. See if your teacher covers this aspect.
Yoga is not a competitive sport- it is very much a moment and time of self introspection, each to ones self on ones mat. While competition is not a bad thing, it's just not the Yoga way. Yoga postures can be very challenging and hard and each person is at their own level - so it isn't about being able to do what the teacher is doing, or what the other students in class are doing, but about what you can do, given where you are at. Teachers must offer modifications for postures as per student needs.
Yoga is meant to lengthen, strengthen muscles, relax the mind, rehabilitate and refresh the body - a good teacher inculcates that spirit of Yoga.
Hope you find the teacher who meets your needs and brings you the best practices.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students must ask themselves -
- what am I looking for? - a fast paced work out, a reasonably paced class, a very slow beginner class, a Hatha Yoga class, Vinyasa Yoga session? - discuss this with the teacher and see what all they usually incorporate in their classes- this might vary class to class with the same teacher
- Do I have injuries I must make the teacher aware of?
- Pregnant? Please let the teacher know.
- post partum - some postures are not suitable fo mamas who have had babies recently- let the teacher know.
- surgery - please make the teacher aware that you're recovering from a surgery or you're about o have one if that's the case. They will help modify postures and keep it gentle and meet your requirements.
