About Kaitlyn

I love working with people and tutoring. I am a tutor at Spokane Falls Community College in a variety of different subjects. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout my entire time there and have been recommended by my professors to tutor. I also teach my younger brother who is in first grade. I am his primary teacher since the COVID-19 pandemic had started. I can tutor subjects such as History, English, and Mathematics. I primarily tutor mathematics st SFCC and I was nominated for the mathematics Spokane honor society award. I love working with people and building connections with the students I help. I also love recurring students.

I started tutoring as a friend in middle school. I would help other students in my classes. In my sophomore year of high school, I was asked to help out some students with assignments. In my Senior year, I was a tutor for juniors with the SAT. When I entered college my professors had recommended me as a tutor to the tutoring center. Since then I have been a tutor there. I add more classes to my list of available subjects every quarter while I work towards my degree.

I have worked as a tutor for the past 6 years. In Middle School, High school, and College. I have also worked with people who have ADHD and Dyslexia so I am able to work very well with people who have learning disabilities. I have been recommended by teachers to tutor. My official job title right now is "Peer Services Tutor" at Spokane Falls Community College

About the lesson

When I begin working with a new student I always have them explain to me what they already know. For math, it is what formulas do you know? what do the numbers mean? etc. I then continue on with one problem at a time and walk them through how to build an equation/formula to get the right answer. Once we walk through a problem together I have them do a problem on their own that is similar to the one we did. I check over that work and then repeat the process as needed.

For English or other writing courses, I begin by having them explain the assignment to me as well as give me the directions for it. Having them explain it to me shows how much they understand, then I can clarify what they misunderstood. Once that is finished I move onto building an outline for them for the essay/writing assignment. Depending on the student I will either have them write the paper itself based on the outline then I will check it over and talk to them about changes. Or I will sit with them through the entire writing process and help them organize their thoughts as they write the paper.

I have worked with many students ranging in ages from 6-50ish. At SFCC I work with a lot of older people who have decided to return to college. I have also worked with people who have broken English and certain learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD. I am also able to work with people who have speech impediments.

My advice is to find a teacher who is willing to communicate with you even outside of the hours they are being paid (such as Emailing back and forth). If their responses are short or uninterested unless they are getting paid then they probably are not very invested in you. Also, make sure to find a tutor you can connect with on a non-academic level and who has a personality you can click with. Working with someone who you can't talk to can get difficult.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should also ask themselves "What do I already know?" It is very helpful to come to a tutoring session being able to explain what you already know in your class. A good tutor should know the general expectations of what your course is asking for. It can be difficult for a student to identify what they don't know because there is a lot of information and expectations, but if you are able to identify what you do know then your tutor can help fill in the gaps. That way they can build your knowledge to where you are expected to be in the class.
