- I make it a point to have learning sessions not end with just surface level understanding but aim to have students know the how and why, not just the what and when.

I am sure all teachers or tutors have experienced this but I really enjoy the moments of euphoria from students when they finally understand the concept that was eluding them. It usually is followed up with an "Ahhh". However my favorite part is right after they understand for the first time, and unprompted without asking will give examples or ask "Oh! So is that why this thing is related to this other thing??". I love the enthusiasm they don't realize they are exuding.

I started tutoring my own peers in highschool actually. I went to a STEM magnet program and sometimes students struggled with the material so I would meet with them during lunch or after school to help them in whatever they need. I have always also been the family tutor for all sorts of subjects because I think I have a ton of patience. Some time in 2018-19 just after I transferred universities, I picked up a gig home schooling a student at a local church in math and other subjects. And I've been a tutor ever since!

Full disclosure, I am still a university student but I have been tutoring others and peers for about 10 years. I have only been paid as a tutor for the past 3 years and have found many people love my approach to tutoring. I am an Electrical Engineering Student so Math is my bread and butter. Day in and day out I think, eat, and sleep math for fun and for my future profession! I have assisted many students ranging from cramming the week before a big exam, as a weekly retainer homeschool tutor making sure the student is on top of learning and homework, to even instruct students so they can skip math courses by testing out of them over the summer.

About the lesson

I prefer to have a 10-30 minute interview with the student and/or parents before comitting to a new student. Just to figure out the obvious difficulties we will need to tackle, if I am going to be on retainer what will scheduling look like, and if I'm going to be working online or in person. Approaching and interacting with the new student depends on age and maturity, but I strive to make the process as seemless and satisfactory as possible.

I've worked with a wide range of students of many ages, grades, and academic temperaments. I have mostly worked with middle school and high school level students but I have helped a fair share of adults as well! Because of my creativity and aforementioned patience, I have actually helped many students with ADHD including helping a college peer with her thesis paper for graduation. I am not certified in teaching students with disabilities but since I have ADHD myself I make it a point to also help those students learn to "redirect the raging river" not try to stop it.

Be sure to get a tutor that makes you feel good about the lesson or the milestones you achieve. Not make you feel incompetent for not knowing or understanding the first, second, or even tenth explaination.

It may seem like an obvious observation but Mathematics is the discovery and manipulation of patterns. In all levels of math, this is true. Now because we as individuals see patterns differently from one another, one tutor may see the pattern of math differently from how you may need to understand it. Not to say they were wrong in their way of teaching, just that it doesn't click with you! You know as well as I do that some subjects in school really stand out in a good way, and 90% of the time it's because of the way the teacher instructed. So don't be afraid to try another tutor if your current one isn't helping you because everyone, even those who think they are unable to understand, have the potential; It just takes the right instructor.

At the end of school before summer vacation started this year, two of my high school students (one of whom was unenthusiastic about additional tutelage outside of school when I first met them) were actually so hyped about learning and potentially getting ahead, that they actually asked me to continue teaching them over the summer so that they can learn the math course they would have to take the following academic year so they can test out of it! Isn't that awesome! Unfortunately a few weeks ago, one regretfully needed to stop because an international trip his family was taking was in conflict with the test date. And since the other student didn't want to leave his friend behind, he decided to stop as well. Although it was sad to see them put in work to learn and have it go seemingly out the window, they are excited to start school again but with a heads start this time. Can't wait to see them again with school coming up soon!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- Do I actually not understand? Or do I need a breather and try again? Perhaps with potentially less frustration and a good snack?

- If I went to the teacher right now, would it look like I actually tried to understand, or would I look like I am trying to cop an easy answer?

- What EXACTLY am I have difficulty understanding? Can I point to the direct issue and explain to the teacher what I need? (AKA: "Would I be able to help them help me?")

Details

I prefer to be paid $30-$35 an hour whether it be online or in person and prorated at the 15 minute markers.

I do also offer group sessions as well, and to save cost for clients and because it isn't the 1 on 1 experience, I offer an 7% discount per additional student (capped at 21%). For example, at $30-$35 per student for a group of 3 would actually be between $25.80-$30.10 an hour per student.

If in the interview as mentioned previously, reveals that the client is struggling financially, I am willing to negotiate a case by case discount. Within reason after all.

Additionally, if you were to refer me to another student, I offer an additional 15% off your next session after the reffered student has had their first session.
