About Mary

As a high school student with an overall GPA of 4.8, I can help students with homework while building essential study habits and strategies that will help them during their academic careers. I focus on explaining concepts and using active learning to maximize time and efficiency. I also earned a 34 on my first ACT after only 3 months of studying. I can help increase test scores or speed up test prep.
**I also offer college planning! I'll edit essays and help with the college application process to any high school seniors
I enjoy working with children and helping them build a strong foundation that will support them through high school or university. I was a high school tutor and enjoyed helping many kids with their various classes (classwork, projects, or homework)
As a high school student, I worked as a swim instructor and a volunteer tutor. Through these two experiences, I developed skills and strategies for helping students learning something new and retaining their new knowledge. Becuause I worked with student of all ages, backgrounds, and capabilities, I have an upper hand with a diverse range of experiences that can translate into how I tutor and interact with students.

My process varies based on the what the student needs help with.
-college application guidance involves me giving tips on building a resume for colleges and editing/curating essays.
-homework and classwork tutoring consists of finishing incomplete assignments and explaining concepts to students if they feel confusion over any topic. I recognize it's important to keep students conscious of studying outside of tutoring and remaining aware of due dates and test days.
-For school test prep, I typically will assign practice questions and review incorrect answers in order to correct mistakes and reinforce knowledge. This is called active learning which is proven to more effective than typical passive learning habits.
-ACT prep is similar but I will provide extra problems to practice a specific concept. I also will time all problems to get students used to working under a time crunch. While tutoring, I will teach them strategies that I used to score a 34 on my first ACT.
Finding a teacher that fits your needs may be difficult. So tutoring have certain styles of teaching that may not adhere to you own learning style. Let a teacher know beforehand what your learning style is (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) and work through a tutoring session. If it's not the right match, work to find another tutor you're more comfortable with.
