About Geri
My passion is the growth of children through knowledge and meanigful learning experiences. I am especially interested in the area of mathematics. I have home schooled my own children for the last five years, as well as taught various subjects, including math, through our local home school cooperative. Likewise, I have tutored several public school children in all general education but have always had an affinity for and enjoyment of numbers.
My base teaching strategies are direct instruction and scaffolding, although I make sure to listen to the child, parents, and assessments to gauge whether other teaching methods and strategies would be more appropriate for the individual student.
Direct Instruction is a proven method that offers constant assessment, quick feedback and allows for the information taught or reinforced in simple and unambiguous terminology.
I like to utilize scaffolding in response to information that may be a struggle for the student. Using this stategy allows me to offer abundant aid in the beginning and less and less help throughout the learning process. This helps the student to be supported until they have accomplished the learning task and are able to complete their goals independently.
I am currently in the last year of earning my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education through Western Governors University, an online university which has given me a good foundation in what it looks like to be an online learner.
Among my greatest passions are children, learning, and mathematics, and to be able to bring them all together is a great joy.

The first visit with a new student is just to get to know them and allow them a time to get to know me and set up a rapport. This visit is a friendly time where I can use basic math games and other such tools in order to gauge where the student is. I also like to understand where it is they would like to go through our time together.
Each subsequent session together consists of building on the skills they already possess and ensuring through many various activites to engage them in their learning.
