About Chandra

I have a passion for education, and have experience working with students with diverse needs and abilities. My students range in age from 6 to 60. Some are already exceeding standards and need an extra challenge. Others require one-on-one support to help boost grades or complete homework. I am a full time math educator by day and enjoy helping students after hours in my areas of expertise: ESL, English (reading and writing), Spanish, elementary through high school math, and science.

Qualifications:

-5+ years of teaching/tutoring experience

-Full time middle school math educator

-Native English speaker and fluent in Spanish

-Trained in Spanish immersion teaching style and grammer based teaching

I first started teaching Spanish to kindergarteners and later to high school and college students. Starting this school year, I chose to use my background in math and science to tutor students full time at a public middle school.

5+ years experience teaching/tutoring students age 7-70

About the lesson

When meeting with a new student, I first help the student evaluate their goals for our time together and gather information about the student's prefered learning style. Based on this information, we sculpt a plan for meeting those goals. Tutoring sessions will look different for each student because they are crafted for each student's needs and interests. Some students may want homework help. Others may request help with test preparation, and some may need extra practice with worksheets, and projects.

Students interested improving their Spanish will choose between an immersive learning experience (Spanish only) or a mixture of English and Spanish led insruction.

I have worked with students with diverse needs and from varied age groups. I am flexible with my teaching style and can adapt to the needs of each student.

Be sure to communicate with any potential tutors the level of the course you or your child needs help with (Pre-Algebra vs. Geometry, Introductory Spanish vs. AP Spanish). Also, communicate the type of help you or your child is looking for (homework help, test prep etc.).

An 8th grader with a learning disability was added to my group of tutees about a month ago. He had consistently been recieving 30% to 40% on his math exams. After working with him consitently on developing math organization skills and reteaching skills he missed from earlier in the semester, I have seen tremendous growth in his abilities and confidence in with the material. On the most recent exam he recieved an 80% and now has a passing grade!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what they want to get out of their time with the tutor. Do you want to bring your grade up from a C to an A? Do you want to polish your skills and prepare for an entrance exam? Some tutors are more interersted helping students improve their grades, and some prefer helping students excel beyond grade level.

You should also consider which tutoring format will be best for you. Are you comfortable navigating an online interface? If so, online tutoring can be convenient and saves time spent traveling. If not, then you should consider traveling to the tutor or finding a tutor who will come to you.
