About Kristin

I have a passion for helping kids understand subjects they are having difficulty with. School and learning are supposed to be fun, but it's hard to find joy in something you don't fully grasp. I want to be able to act as a bridge between what's introduced at school and the spark, the "Aha!" moment, that occurs when a kid finally "gets it." I previously tutored high school math while in college and worked as an assistant in a Kumon Math and Reading center as well. One important skill I've learned is the ability to break concepts down into smaller digestible pieces and then bring it all back together.

It's always rewarding to see the change in attitude from students when the lessons start to click together, or when they start seeing results in test scores or homework. One of the most enjoyable aspects of teaching is reaching a child in his own unique learning style and seeing him understand and apply the lessons. I am currently a stay at home mom with a flexible schedule, which will allow me to work with students' needs. I have two little girls, the older of which I am currently homeschooling. With this in mind, I am always looking for fun ways to teach, simplify concepts to bite-size pieces, and bring the joy into learning!

I tutored high school math while in college and also worked as an assistant in a Kumon Math and Reading Center for 3 years. I am currently homeschooling my 4-year old as well and it's been fun exploring different teaching strategies.

Typically, I introduce myself and tell the student a little bit about me, then I ask them to do the same. Afterwards, I ask the student to show me what he's been working on at school, where he's comfortable at and what he's struggling with to get a good idea of how he feels about the subject I'll be helping with. I also ask questions about the subjects he likes best, what he thinks is the reason for having difficulties and the subject we're going to work on, etc. to help me understand where he's currently at and how I can best help him.
