About Alec

It is a privilege to be able to work with students of all ages and ability levels. I have taught game development to children as young as 12, helped IT help desk workers study for and pass the CCNA and CCNP networking certification exams and Unix sysadmin exams. I have taught Python programming to a retiree looking to pick up a new skill.

Seeing students surprise themselves with their own abilities is the most satisfying feeling in the world. I can help you pass a test or a class, but what I really want is for you to be excited to go out and use your new skills. Every student is unique. I have seen timid, unconfident students blossom into full confidence with their technical abilities with the right encouragement and understanding. I have seen rock solid professionals gain a whole new way of thinking about computers while I was working with them, which allowed them to surpass my own abilities. My method of teaching is gentle and patient, but I will still push you out of your comfort zone and encourage you to achieve things you didn't think you would be capable of--when you're ready.

I have a bachelors degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder. I started programming in middle school using parametric CAD software to model 3D airplanes for use in X-Plane flight simulator. I continued modding games through high school, where I got college credit from the Rochester Institute of Technology through Project Lead The Way for some of the engineering classes I was taking at Centaurus High School. I worked as a system administrator student assistant at the Computational and Information Systems Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, where I got to learn system administration and network administration for a huge variety of platforms: Windows and Mac laptops, Linux, BSD, Solaris, and Windows servers, and even some time on the Yellostone supercomputer. Most of my career was working on hardware/software integration in the data storage industry, where I worked after college--NetApp and Seagate. I have been tutoring on the side the whole time.

Rather than tell you the answer, I teach how to self-teach. My sessions start by going over big picture goals. We will then develop a plan of how to break the goals down into chunks that we can achieve in hour long sessions. I will give a prompt, and encourage you to try things out in real time using your computer to run learning experiments. When something from my experience comes to mind that's relevant, I will bring it up and suggest an exercise to cement the concept. Eventually you will feel confident finding the resources you need to learn any new technical skill all on your own, which is necessary in our field because technologists can never stop learning.

The first session is at an introductory rate of $25 so that we can both get a good feel for how things will be when we get into the swing of things. After that, my rate is $50 per session, which usually lasts between an hour and 1.5 hours. All sessions are guaranteed to be at least one hour, and the student gets to decide how long they want to go after that. I am happy to stay on for the full hour and a half every time if that's what you want.
