About Kayla
I genuinely enjoy seeing students learn and fully comprehend new tasks. I, myself, find that learning new things widens my view of all the opportunity around me. Each student is different, and the way they learn must be approached so that they can retain the information and know how and when to apply it. My friends and family often come to me with questions, as even if I do not know the answer, I will gladly do research on the subject. Learning, to me, is exciting and invigorating. I have no fear when it comes to in depth research and enjoy the challenge when I have to learn about something I am not familiar.
Patience, understanding, and focus are key in ensuring that students can find the relevance and beauty in the information they are being taught. All too often students become discouraged when they do not understand a topic. The reason for this is because most of the time topics are taught with the use of only one learning method. Whether that be from reading a book, going through a power point, or a live lecture. Using only one teaching method in turn eliminates the ability for many students to comprehend the information. I have found this to be truer as I tutor my own children.
I have a B.S. in Cybersecurity from Purdue where I maintained a 3.98 GPA through graduation. I am currently attending Purdue for my M.S. in Cybersecurity where I currently hold a 4.0 GPA. I specialize in writing, math, computer technology, data analysis, and general studies. I currently hold a Sec+ certification.
I got started teaching right out of highschool. I have since become more active in teaching with my own children being taught at home due to COVID-19. As my children are 3, 12, and 14, there are several teaching methods I use to ensure they are successful in understanding and applying the material.
I originally went to college to be an elementary school teacher where I proctored students for 6 months. During that time I found that I had a passion for technology. I subsequently joined the military where I became an IT specialist and lead our Network Assurance team. During this time I trained hundreds of individuals on computer technology use and became the Subject Matter Expert of several computer devices.
I have since obtained my B.S. in Cybersecurity with a 3.98 GPA, and am currently pursuing my M.S. in Cybersecurity Management with a 4.0 GPA.

When working with a new student the process is to start by providing a level of trust and understanding. Students learn better when they are appreciated for their time and diligence. I start by introducing myself and getting to know my student. I then ask to learn more about my students through simple questions to understand their learning preferences. I enjoy making learning an exciting venture for all involved. While the tutoring session will be performed in a structured manner, it is important that students are given the opportunity to ask questions and get the clarification they are entitled to at all times.
When looking for a tutor for computer studies, math, language, or writing it is important to find passion. If the tutors don't have a fire for that subject the engagement and understanding of the tutor and student will be diminished.
My 14-year-old daughter came to me after she got a bad grade on a math test. I was discouraged that she had not come to me prior to the test. She thought that she knew the material, but her test showed she did not, and resorted to assuming she just hated math. I went through the test with her line by line, both of us working the problems, finding the mistakes, and correcting them. We worked heavily on the understanding portion. While I had no background on how the lesson was taught and was given no materials to help, we were able to successfully complete the assignment and her confidence and attitude toward the material drastically improved.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Am I ready to engage in a constructive conversation with the teacher?
Am I ready to be challenged to think outside of my comfort zone?
Am I ready to be pushed to try new learning techniques and try new methods to retain information?
