About Seth

When I was in high school, I realized that I had a love for math and a passion for teaching. So as soon as I got to college, I wanted to help others with math as much as possible. As an undergraduate, I tutored courses such as Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 & 2, and Discrete Math for a total of 4 years. Furthermore, as an education student, I did my student teaching at Central High School in Grand Forks, teaching 2 sections of Intermediate Algebra and 3 sections of Pre-Calculus for a full semester. Currently, as a graduate student, I am teaching 3 sections of Intermediate Algebra, as well as tutoring in the Math Active Learning Lab at the university.

What I most enjoy about teaching is the look on a student's face when a difficult concept finally "clicks." This is a feeling I've had countless times throughout my own education, it is tremendously rewarding. Everything I do in teaching/tutoring is to facilitate that moment of discovery for a student.

About the lesson

Typically, I prefer to correspond with a student before meeting with them so we can determine a plan for our meetings and not waste their time or money. I find that most students who struggle with math do so because there are a few major concepts (fractions, functions, equality, etc.) that they simply do not understand. During the first couple of sessions, I attempt to determine which specific concepts the student doesn't understand, then work to "fill in the gaps" in their understanding. At this point, students are usually in a much better position to succeed in their course.
