About Alexis

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and currently teach 4th grade Math and Science. I am also endorsed by the state in Reading, ESOL (English Speakers of other Languages), and Gifted. I have experience tutoring, and am certified in Grades K-6. In my previous experience, I have tutored a student in Kindergarten, a student in 4th grade, and a student in 5th grade in all subjects. I taught Reading/writing for 2 years, and have also taught Math/science for two years. I am also experienced in the FSA (Florida Standards Assesssment) criteria, and can help students prepare for the test.

I have known since I was a little girl that I wanted to be a teacher. I have always had a passion for working with kids, making a difference, and helping others. I love inspiring my students, and instilling a love of learning where students can feel safe, and have fun in an educational environment. In order to help students acheive their goals, I prepare detailed, standards based lessons for them at their level to meet their needs and help them better understand the content, while still making the experience enjoyable rather than boring. I also try to instill a growth mindset so students become resilient and learn to never give up!

In college, I had to complete a Student Teaching internship in order to graduate. Immediately after the internship, the principal of the school I was currently interning at, hired me to teach 4th grade, and I have been there ever since. I have known I wanted to be a teacher my whole life and it has always been a passion of mine.

I graduated for FAU with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Educaiton, and am certified to teach grades K-6 in all subjects. I am also certified in Reading, ESOL (English Speakers of other Languages), and Gifted along with many other additional trainings I have participated in at work as part of our professional development.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I typically start a casual conversation with him/her and get to know the student's interests/learning style, so he/she will feel comfortable, and I can best suit his/her needs. I also discuss with the family what it is exactly that the student is struggling with, and needs the most help with, so I know what to work on with the student.

I have worked with students of all types and all ages. Before teaching, I was a gymnastics coach for 5 years for children between the ages of 2-13. In addition to coaching, I was a substitute teacher for grades K-5 and have worked with students who have disabilities, problematic behavior, gifted students, and students who are not proficient in the English langauge.

"It is important to not only look at the qualifications of the teacher, but you should also look for kindness, respect, joyfulness, passion, and compassion toward students. While a teacher may be very knowlegeable about the content he/she is teaching, none of it will be affective if the teacher is unable to build a relationship with the student, and establish a meaningful connection that makes learning fun."

I recently had a student who was constantly off task, disinterested in school, and was falling behind academically. After many months of working with this student and trying, he finally came around and changed completely. He told me that I inspired him and helped him enjoy learning. From that point forward he was participating in the lessons, his grades were improving, and he became an improved version of himself. These are the moments I live for.
