About Rita

I don't believe in memorizing tricks and pnemonics when learning new material. After all, they can be easily forgotten. Instead, I help students understand the whys before the hows. With a solid understanding, students don't have to rely on tricks. They use their what they know to tackle the unknown.

Additionally, my tutoring is individualized for each student. As we work together, I make note of skills and concepts that need to be strengthedand reveiwed befor moving on to the next skill. Students learn at their own pace, not anyone else's.

I really love working with kids and helping them realize that they are capable of reading and doing math. I love seeing their confidence grow as their skills improve. I know I've made a difference when they are not afraid to try because they have what it takes to figure things out.

I worked at a public charter school for 15 years first as an assistant teacher and then as a reading and math intervention teacher. During that same timeframe, I also tutored students. In 2017 I started tutoring online and saw how it benefitted students because they felt more comfortable at home. Parents found it helpful not having to drive or keep siblings entertained. I stopped tutoring in person and began tutoring only online later that year.

I pursue professional development throughout the year to learn best practices in the subjects I tutor and how to deliver the most effective online experience.

About the lesson

I first like to get to know new students by finding out about their family, if they have pets, what hobbies or sports they take part in when not in school, what their favorite and least favorite subjects are, what their strengths and weaknesses are (in the subject being tutored), and what they hope to et out of tutoring.

After sharing about myself, we usually play a game. I believe it's important to build a relationship with students so they feel comfortable with me. Kids don't care how much you know; they want to know how much you care. I want students to feel like they can let their guard down and feel okay about asking questions and letting me know when they don't understand something.

Next, I assess students so I can pinpoint what they already know and which concepts we need to work on together.
