About Michael

I am very down to earth since I have been in this situation before. I have regularly tutored students around my age who need some help to complete the class. I can easily create practice problems and use several methods (simplifying, step by step, walking through) to help students learn. I listen to the student's needs and help however I can.

I like it when someone conquers a problem that tehy thought was impossible. I like it when a student realizes that that difficult problem wasn't that hard all along. I like to give students a confidence boost before an exam. I like to show students how to tackle their homework even if I need to remind them of the basics.

I have always liked my math teachers even the ones that the rest of the school didn't. I found their method of teaching interesting and how they taught to the struggling students over the comfortable students. I started tutoring before school to students in prealgebra to trigonometry. Some studnets needed help with the word problems, while others didn't understand the concept and probably needed more than the 45 minutes before school.

thI have graduated with a bachellor's in Mechnical Engineering. This involved solving some difficult problems in higher levels of math. It turns out that a lot of high level math relies on remembering the previous math classes. I excelled at this. I have tutored for a year at my high school for Algebra 1. I have tutored some neighbors on pre-calculus and calculus 2 for two months each. I am helping my younger brother with his pre algebra classes.

About the lesson

First get to know each other's hobbies and such. Then ask them why they think they are struggling. This allows me to be able to relate the hard math to something they can visualize. Then determine my teaching style to what tehy need help with. Sometimes it is learning a forgotten topic, learnign a new concept or using this new concept for a difficult problem.

I have worked with students in all levels of high school and a few college students. They ususally needed help with homework instead of test prep.

Engineering majors are a bit stubbornwith themselves and each other. They see their solution as the best solution without really thinking about it. Over time though we have been humbled enough to see that we're not always right. In other words we all mess up on the simple stuff. Not knowing where to start though is an issue.

Recently I helped my cousin with Calculus 2 with working through integrals, particularly revolved solids. I was able to explain why the equations to solve these come to be and how they worked. I particuylarly remember proving the napkin ring paradox from an episode of vsauce.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is important to think about how to ask the teacher for help. Saying I don't understand this will lead the teacher to start from the beginning and find somewhere you do understand. This takes a while and you could help them understand your needs better. Try: giving them a problem that you have tried and either messed up somehow or got stuck during it.

Details

I am fine with going as low as $25 per hour for the high school math (Algebra to precalculus). Calculus 1-3 I'd recommend $35 per hour for the difficult problems. If moneyis short and you would like to take your time I am ok with dropping my price if you need to take it slow.
