About Harold
I taught beginning guitar for 10 years while I was a teacher in Nashville, TN. The program was then called Little Kids Rock. It is now called Modern Band. I am now semi-retired from teaching. Currently, I am an Adjunct Professor for Daytona State College teaching ESOL. I have taught English as a Second Language for about 15 years. I like to make learning guitar fun by giving the student simplified chords on the very first lesson so they can begin playing along on simple songs from the beginning.
It is so much fun to play music with other people. It doesn't matter how much of a pro or beginner you are. When living in Nashville, I was privileged to play some for fun with professional musicians. I was really intimidated at first, but was pleasantly surprised that the pros weren't judging me, but were just enjoyed playing. Musicians are some of the nicest people. The reason I play and teach is simply that it is a joy and so much fun to play!
I was a public school teacher before retirement and taught guitar through the Little Kids Rock national program. I was trained initially to get certified and have attended workshops in Fort Collins, CO.
I have two masters degrees in teaching--elementary k-6 and English as a Second Language K-12. I am a certified Little Kids Rock instructor with ten years experience while working closely with the coordinator for LKR for Nashville, TN. I have experience teaching guitar to both children and adults. Recently, I have taught online for Daytona State College in the adult ESOL program.

I taught beginning rock guitar and bass to 3rd and 4th grade students for 10 years. I get new students right into playing a song by teaching simplified one or two finger chords so that learning guitar will be FUN from the beginning. I also teach simple tablature as well as the minor pentatonic scale, which is great for beginning rock, blues, folk and country.
Elementary students and some adults
Find someone who will make learning guitar fun and not a chore. It takes diligence and practice, but it can be enjoyable at the same time. My main advice to the student would be to practice between lessons. It will make a difference like night and day.
Every year when I was teaching in Nashville, the music teacher and I would work together to do a big event called Rock Fest. This included all of the LKR teachers of Nashville. My fellow teacher there, Mark Hale, was the coordinator for LKR in Nashville. This even included over 100 students and 10 different schools. Each school would put on a concert.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Pick a teacher who will challenge you but at the same time encourage you. Think about what you want to get out of playing the guitar or bass.
