About Victoria

After graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Elementary Education, I moved to New Jersey to take a Kindergarten teaching position. I enjoyed teaching my students the fundamentals of reading and writing through reading and writing workshop as well as Orton-Gillingham. During summers off I worked with students to prepare them for their upcoming grade and remediate anything they struggled with in their previous grade.

After my experience as a kindergarten teacher, I moved to Virginia to teach 3rd grade for two years. I worked at a STEM certified school under the 2017-2018 principal of the year. I helped prepare my students for upper elementary school, working on reading to learn instead of learning to read in the younger grades. We also focused on writing in paragraph form and excelling in math with multiplication and division. I also helped my students prepare for standardized testing and for the gifted program that they are selected for in 4th grade.

I have since moved to Pittsburgh after marrying my college sweetheart and am looking to continue helping children in the area excel in and out of the classroom.

Math is a subject that requires students to understand the basics in order to build upon the essential functions of math to learn new and more difficult subject matter. It is essential for students to keep practicing math in and out of the classroom to maintain the knowledge of basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc.) in order to excel.

I have many tools that help students show their work during each step of a math problem in order to analyze any errors and where they occur. I also provide many online tools to help students increase the speed and memory of quick math facts that are vital for success in math in the future.

I have training in both Reading & Writing Workshops as well as Orton-Gillingham, which are both proven methods of helping children learn to read. I have experience in the lower elementary grades, in which Orton-Gillingham is most useful. I also have experience in the upper elementary grades with the workshop approach, which focuses on learning from reading instead of learning how to read which is done in the lower grades.

Working in both lower and upper elementary grades has allowed me to become a seasoned spelling teacher. The most effective spelling approach I like to use is called Word Study. In word study, students aren’t just memorizing the spelling of 10 or 20 words for a test at the end of the week. Instead, they are studying one or two spelling patterns for the week instead of memorizing a select group of words. This is so they can apply those spelling patterns to words that are not necessarily on their spelling list.

I enjoy working with students of different ages, different abilities and different backgrounds. It is my pleasure to come up with or assist in the making of a game plan that allows my students to appreciate and take ownership of their learning while they improve in the focused areas.

I have teaching certifications from Pre-K - 6th grade in all subject areas. The bulk of my teaching experience has been in 3rd grade however, I have taught pre-school, kindergarten, 1st grade and 5th grade.

About the lesson

When first working with a new student, I speak with the student themseleves as well as their parents or guardians. We speak about goals of the tutoring sessions, including which subjects we want to focus on and what we want as the end result. I like to collect some background knowledge about my new student so I ask about their academics and give them some short activities to complete so I can assess their strengths and their needs. After understanding the entire student including their needs, wants and any other factors, I can peice tofether a plan of action for our tutoring sessions.

I have worked with a wide range of students including different age groups and different ability levels. I have experience working in an inclusion classroom with students ranging from having ADHD and autism to students in the gifted program.
