About Michael

Hi there! My name is Michael and I am a PhD student at the University of Miami pursuing a doctorate in English, Literary Studies! I have been tutoring for three years, focusing in English, History, and the Social Sciences. I also work at the University of Miami Writing Center assisting students with everything from Resumes and Medical School Entrance Essays to Literary and Film analyses. Prior to this, I taught Media Studies and English Literature at the high school level.

I love talking with students and helping them think through particularly interesting or difficult problems. It's quite a bit of fun and students seem to enjoy the dialogic experience!

It was an early passion. I began substitute teaching at 18 years old. After this, I quickly secured work teaching AICE Media Studies and AICE English Literature (AICE is the Cambridge equivalent of AP). I am now pursuing my PhD, and am an Instructor/Tutor at the University.

I taught Media Studies and English Literature at the High School level for two years. Prior to this I was a substitute teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. I am currently pursuing my PhD in English at the University of Miami. At the University of Miami I am a Tutor at the Writing Center and an Instructor in the Writing Studies department.

About the lesson

I work with students to ensure that they're writerly voice is able to come forth through a careful conversational process. Students and I will talk briefly through assignments and their difficulties and challenges. We will work from there to address those elements. If a student brings a written assignment in for review or discussion I will typically ask the student to read the materials aloud while I take notes and annotate the documents. After the student has completed this, the student will review all areas of opportunity and discuss potential additions and solutions that can be added to address their assignment.

I have worked with all types of students. I have five appointments a week at the University of Miami Writing Center. I have been working at this position for one year. Students range from all over the university; medical, engineering, English, history, law, etc.

I attempt to help students with their writing and thinking specifically. I enjoy talking with students through their thought processes and writing processes. I also work with middle school students on English and History.
