About Joan

I ask questions. I listen. I learn. I tutor. Students 15 yrs & up.

I've been in education for 30+ years, and have a doctorate from Harvard Graduate School of Education in teaching and learning. I focus on developing critical and creative thinking and writing skills, with a particular focus in the humanities and social studies. I work with both high school and college students, since I've taught both levels (including grad school). I offer clarity & rigourous language for what's going on and what a student needs to do. I am perceptive, attentive, caring and offer creative approaches/lessons to help students learn and love learning - regardless of a subject. I individualize each session. I've won teacher of the year as a h.s. teacher, have taught teachers, and was a school administrator, so I have a solid understanding of all facets of school/education life. Students learn & have fun doing so!! My website is joanblanusa.com

I love to watch someone finally succeed at something they've been struggling with, or someone finally understand something they previously could not. I love watching someone realize that a person DOES believe in them, and that they CAN do it; that they can think critically, deeply, with rigor and creativity, can persevere. I love watching and helping someone know they have much to offer, and helping them build the skills to achieve that. I live for that.

I have a Masters in Teaching from Simmons College, a Doctorate in Teaching & Learning from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

I also complete the course work for a Masters in Counseling, but did not complete the degree, at St. Mary's College of California (instead, I was asked to join their faculty of education, and taught Learning & Development, and supervised student teachers at their School of Education).

I taught social studies at Brookline High School & at Bainbridge High School (in Washington St.)

I was a teaching fellow at Harvard Graduate School of Education in both the courses Cognition & the Art of Instruction, and Adult Development.

I was a field supervisor at Harvard Graduate School of Education, overseeing HGSE master degree students doing internships in a variety of fields, including neuroscience, media and education, curriculum design, educational non-profits.

I ask the student to explain in his/her own words what it is they're looking for and what they think they need help with.

1 exercise I use that everyone seems to like is I ask them to make me a short slideshow/video of pictures of themselves or things they like, so I can see what matters to them.  I ask them to pair it w/ music if they like.  We watch the video together, and then I share what I pick up about them, and ask if I'm picking up what they want, and ask them to expound of what they've chosen.  It's a great, fun, creative way to get to know my students, and for them to share with me who they are, and what matters.  From there we can work together to draw from their skills to develop their voice, and the approaches that will best work for them to do what is required, and have fun doing so.
