About Joe
I have been working in education since 2014 as a City Year (Baton Rouge, 8th-grade reading), a volunteer tutor (Avalon High School; St. Paul), after school tutoring in South Minneapolis for a family, and a special education teacher (KIPP Northeast Denver Middle School).
I recently moved back to Minneapolis from Denver where I taught special education for grades 5-8 in math and literacy for two years to a diverse student body. I am a licensed special education teacher for K-12, as well as general education for 5-12.
I have a deep passion for guiding students, especially with exceptional needs, to find success. I have expertise in working with students with autism, trauma, and other disabilities. I believe education is the most impactful way to change the world.
I taught at a school that focuses on testing and data (KIPP Charter), so test prep is an area I will help with. However, I believe that students need to find their own passion within school and education to truly find success - I will individualize all tutoring to the student to ensure they enjoy their opportunity to grow.
The opportunity to work with youth is one that I cherish. Students teach me about myself and the world in a way that can only come from teaching/tutoring.
I am stepping out of the classroom to go into graduate school at the University of Minnesota (public policy), but I do not want to lose the joy I get from teaching. I believe that education is the most essential area in improving the world, and that begins with inspiring students to become lifelong learners.

We'll start off by getting to know each other and making a few goals to work towards. This conversation will include what the student would like/expect out of tutoring (homework help, studying, test prep, etc). Then, we'll determine what level the student is at in the area they want to improve in to ensure they are receiving appropriate work. From there, we will make a plan and timeline to achieve the goals.
