About Leeann

I am just entering my 14th year with a local, private school where I teach English to 6th and 7th graders. I absolutely LOVE my job! I strongly believe that when a child says they don't like to read, that only means they haven't found the right story for them! I am committed to helping every student discover their love for good books. Though my first love is reading, as an English teacher, I am also a strong believer in understanding the practical nature of writing. Writing isn't only about essays. Writing is a form of communication, and as such, it deserves our attention. I believe that every student can find their own unique voice.

I LOVE working with young people! I would have to say that the thing that I love most about working with them, however, has to be helping students to figure out how WONDERFUL reading for fun can be!

So often, young people feel that reading is "boring," I believe that reading can appeal to ANYONE! If someone doesn't like reading it is only because they don't know what they LIKE to read!

I have curated a classroom library of over 1400 titles! I am deeply devoted to putting the RIGHT books in the hands of the right students! There is a book out there for EVERY child!

I have a passion for reading, and it was always a dream of mine to share that passion. Ever since I was a young girl I pictured myself teaching!

I have a masters in English from Salem State University and I have been at a local private school for 14 years.

About the lesson

I begin working with each student by asking them what they would like to get out of our meetings. It is important to me to understand my student's goals so that I can help them achieve them.

I have worked with all types of students and believe that every student can learn if they are open to it.

I would tell them that finding someone who they feel comfortable with is the most important thing. The best teachers do not feed their students information, rather, they help them learn where to find their own answers and provide support when needed. In order to make the best of an arrangement like this, it is vital that the student feel able to make mistakes and learn from them!

I recently experienced a moment when a young lady came up to me at an event for new students and told me that I was the reason she chose to attend the school where I teach. This was confirmed enthusiastically by her mother who told me that after visiting my classroom she refused to look at any other schools.

I was tremendously flattered and asked her why she felt so strongly about my class. She told me that she could tell that I really cared about my students because I made my room cozy for them, and when I was teaching I listened to their stories. She also said that she loves reading, and could tell that it was a big part of our class.

I will never forget that lovely compliment!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what their STRENGTHS are as well as the areas with which they want help. Many teachers forget that there are many ways to find the right answer. What is good for one student may not be good for another. A good teacher will rely on a student's strengths to help that student develop confidence in themselves.
