About Sarah

I am a published Author and have used my love of writing and books to stir the imagination of my students! I pride myself in building strong writing foundations for ALL students. I enjoy working with struggling writers and use IEW to build writing mechanics.

Experience:

•8 years homeschooling

•4 years teaching English learners (ages from 11 to 14)

•2 years in private school sector (PT teacher)

•Currently working on my Masters in Secondary Education (English)

I love to see a student who is often disengaged in learning ENJOY himself/herself. Often times, students lack confidence/guidance in their learning. I'm here to help them grow in confidence and ability.

My husband works for the military. With frequent moves, we decided to homeschool our children. I left my career and began teaching my own children. I always taught classes in hybrids/co ops. I usually taught electives such as Rhetoric, Fallacy and Apologetics/Workdview). We homeschooled until my daughter's Sophomore year when we moved here. My son attends the school where I teach part time. I decided to earn another Masters in June of 2020. I should graduate in December of 2021.

About the lesson

I set up a informal meeting with the student to learn his/her likes and dislikes. I like to tailor writing assignments to their interests. If students are interested in the subject matter, they are more likely to learn and engage. With the parent(s), we discuss needs and expectations. I.e. Am I introducing new material or am I focusing on reinforcing what they are currently doing in class? Etc.

Depending on the student, I will assess them on grammar, writing mechanics and comprehension by assigning a small, informal assignment to help me in determining where to start with them. Any testing/assessments that can be provided are beneficial.

I have extensive experience with homeschoolers. I am very comfortable teaching various academic levels. I have extensive experience working with English learners online as well as students in both private/public sector.

Make sure you are comfortable with your tutor. You want to feel at ease when receiving instruction. You should always be able to ask questions and work at a pace that is best for YOU!

I was working with a 7th grade student (EL) learner. He wasn't fond of writing. We worked hard on topic outlines while still making it fun. At the end of class one day, my student told me he was always sad when class was over. He was really enjoying learning to write!! I truly enjoy the moments where the student is enjoying themselves and lose track of time.

Details

Depends on time, frequency and location.

There is a one-time semester fee for material/set up. (Never more than $75)

Average rate is $50 per hour. References are available.

*Due to Covid -19, I am only taking Virtual Students. Lessons will be via Google Class and Google Meets. We will reaccess at a later date.
