About Sophia

At BookSmarts, english is taught in a way that is easy understood and clear. In English classes it can be easy to get caught up in the numerous literary rules and devices and become overwhelmed. I want to provide support and assistance to those that struggle with writing or comprehending literary texts. English doesn't have to be hard and tedious, I want to show that it can be interesting and engaging!

I absolutely love literature and writing has always been a form of escape for me so my goal when tutoring is to show students just how interesting and entertaining English can be! I know a few peers of mine that claim to hate reading and say that they only pick up a book if it's for an English assignment. My response to that would be to tell them that they simply haven't found the right book for them yet! :)

I am not a certified teacher as I am a senior in High School, but I took an interest in tutoring because I genuinely enjoy English and want to use my knowledge to help those that struggle with it.

I do not currently have any training but during my time in high school I have been in honors English classes each year as well as being recommended for Ap English. This year as a senior I am taking College Composition II and am learning how to analyze and understand texts on a collegiate level and writing essays in response to said texts.

About the lesson

The first step is working out what pieces the student is struggling with. By talking about assignments in the student's class that they have struggled with in the past, I can gauge how to explain the material in a way that makes sense to that particular student. It's also important to identify the students' strengths and teach them how to use them as tools. This process entails reviewing the student's course material and assignments and picking out the one's the student had a hard time with and walking them through it.

Details

Typically I will charge $10.00 an hour for each session. As I am a student myself, I am only available for sessions between the hours of 3:00-6:00pm on weekdays. I am willing to work with the student on weekends and make a schedule that works best for them.
