About Leia
As simple as it may sound, I approach each student as a unique individual with individual needs. I enjoy using videos to explain concepts, PowerPoint Presentations to drive them home, and worksheets for the last half of sessions to practice what we have learned. I'm not into "edutainment," but I do want my students to be engaged, challenged, and enjoy themselves during sessions. Additionally, I vow to be the best personal cheerleader you've ever had!
My favorite moments are the "eureka!" ones when a student suddenly understands the concept we are working on. I enjoy helping my students to succeed more than any other part of my job.
During my Junior year at UNCG, my Writing Theory teacher approached me after I had turned in an assignment and asked if I would be interested in working as a Peer Tutor in the college's University Writing Center. I was. I then worked at the WC for the remained of my undergrad and graduate years, with the exception of now, as a student must be ful time to be offered a position at the WC.
I tutor English/Writing/ and ESOL. I have a Bachekor's in english and am finishing my last 2 classes for my Master's degree. I also recently finished my Capstone project for my TESOL Certification.

I try to spend at least 50% of our first session asking the student questions to get a feel for what subjects they are comfortable with and what subjects they need help with. I also ask a number of questions to try to determine what type of learner the student is: visual, auditory, kinistenic, etc. Then we talk about the students needs and goals and whether I feel the goals the student has set are realistically achieveable in the time we have together. I like to close by asking the student what they nedd/expect from me as their tutor,
Since working online, I have tutored every age from 2nd grade to post-graduate students. From phonics and reading to writing Doctoral Dissertations. I also have focused on working with students diagnosed with ADHD, as I am intimately familiar with the condition, as my father was diagnosed more than 15 years ago.
Meet with them either via Zoom, Google Meet, etc. You want to make certain that your personalities are compatible. Take a look at their profile, specifically their education and experience. Both are incredibly important, however, if there is a personality clash, the match may not be in your best interest. You need someone you feel comfortable with and can talk with openly and honestly about your needs and goals.
I'm currently working with a very intelligent young man whose passions are science and math. He feels he is somehow lacking in his English education, but I disagree. He is only 16 and taking all AP classes and receiving As. We are in the process of writing college application admissions essays for some very prestigious schools and he is slowly realizing that he is a much better writer than he has previously given himself credit for. As an introverted student, it is always heartwarming to see him smile when he is able to figure things out for himself or suggest his own edits. I believe 50% of teaching is being a cheerleader for your students.

Generally pricing depends on the student's age, ability level (at, above or below grade lvel), the number of students, and the type of tutoring required for English. English tutoring is less than Writing tutoring, and ESL is the most expensive because it requires the most preparation and time. Rates start at $25/hr and can go as high as $65/hr based on an individual student's needs.
