About Luodan

I am a recent graduate from Northwestern University and the Medill School of Journalism and Communications.

I have two younger siblings (ages 10 and 15) whom I have tutored for the past few months during the pandemic and will continue helping them fulfill their summer and fall assignments. I am currently holding daily coding classes for my brother every weekday and assigning reading assignments and projects.

I worked as a Communcations Intern at the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Nicaragua. During this time, I independently helped a local organization with their communications and social media tasks by hosting daily English and technology classes. I also expanded these classes to the entire community every Friday.

I have been working as an editor for an innovative science curriculum created by the company, “Next Generation Storylines”. In this position, I structure, edit and format hundreds of teacher guides and student handouts. This job has helped me strengthen my abilities to provide educational materials and lessons.

I also worked as an ambassador for the Global Learning Office at Northwestern University, for which I assist students in preparing for their study abroad experiences. I hold informational sessions to provide information on how education differs from country to country, and how these differences can impact students of different backgrounds. I personally studied abroad in Prague, Czech Republic during my third year.

I have expertise in using Google programs, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, design programs such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, and coding programs like Python, HTML and CSS. I would be happy to give any introduction lessons on any of these programs as well.

I have always had a love for teaching. I have a Bachelor's in Journalism and Communications, which really reflects my passion for educating others. Equally, I also love learning from others. I think education is all about sharing knowledge between people, which results in a good foundation for learning.

I am currently holding coding lessons for my 15-year-old brother for whom I have developed a coding curriculum, projects, and assignments. We have a lecture or lab session every week day.

About the lesson

First, I have an in-depth discussion with the student about their curriculum expectations, needs, and scheduling availabilitites. Next, I develop a currciulum that meets their needs, and a schedule that works for both the student and me. Then, I review all of this information with the student and/or parents/guardians to ensure that everything is perfect before starting lessons.

I have worked with a wide range of students, from K-12 grades.

My advice is that it's really important to find a teacher who is passionate about the topics that you are looking to learn. You should also hire a teacher that you not only find suitable, but also that you have fun with and are excited to work with. This sets a great foundation for learning.

Back to the coding lessons for this summer. My high-school age brother is not the best at paying attention in class, and finds it even more difficult to stay focused during our lessons at home. However, last week, he completed a coding project perfectly and I could not have been happier or more proud. It showed that he both respected me as a teacher and found interest in the curriculum itself.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should first think about what they want to learn, the amount of time they are willing to dedicate to classes, and their specific needs for learning. These are all crucial points to lay out with a potential teacher to make sure everyone is on the same page and that the teaching can go smoothly.

Details

Because I am a recent college graduate, I definitely have the skills to tutor, however, I lack the certifications of official tutors. I acknowledge this setback and expect a salary that is suitable to my experiences and knowledge.
