About Julia
I am passionate about tutoring, mental health, and education. My skills include: mentorship, tutoring, teaching, active listening, writing, reading, critical thinking, making connections, and inspiring students to see their own strengths and write their own stories.
I have experience tutoring both middle and high school students for the past four years. From 2016 until the summer of 2019, I worked as a high school English teacher at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland. As an 11th grade English teacher, I provided one-on-one support for students as they brainstormed ideas for their college essays, and I gave them feedback on their essays after they finished their drafts.
At St. Andrew’s, I also co-sponsored a peer mentorship program with our school counselor, advised high school students to help them with study skills and self-advocacy, and worked in professional development at the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL), a Mind, Brain, Education science resource center for teachers.Through my role at the CTTL, I became trained to facilitate Teaching All Kinds of Minds, a workshop through which educators develop skills to identify current strengths and weaknesses in student learning, connect them to students’ learning profiles, and choose instructional strategies that leverage their strengths.
As an educator who also worked at a resource center for teachers, I learned about and witnessed firsthand the profound impact that emotions have on learning. My experience as an educator inspired me to pursue a degree in social work, for which I am now taking classes at the University of Denver and interning at Skinner Middle School. As a school social work intern, I empower students with knowledge concerning their developing brains, strategies they can employ to achieve their goals, and ways they can manage their emotions. In addition, I observe, participate, and facilitate group counseling sessions, such as a social skills group for students on the autism spectrum and a grief group for students.
I will help students achieve their goals by working with them to identify their strengths and how we can use their strengths to address their current areas of challenge. I incorporate my knowledge and passion for Mind, Brain, Education science as well as mental health into my work as a tutor through the use of multiple modalities and strategies to alleviate anxiety and stress. I love working with learners and see tutoring as an opportunity to gain skills, knowledge, and confidence.

I started teaching after tutoring for a year and realizing it was the best part of my day! I absolutely love working with students, and though I decided to pursue a degree in social work, I see being a therapist as being a teacher as well. I aim to continue working with young adults in my career as a social worker and tutor.
I have been tutoring for the past four years, and I was an educator for the past three years before deciding to pursue a graduate degree in social work.

I believe building relationships is essential to the tutoring process, so I will spend time getting to know new students: their strengths, their areas of challenge, their passions, and their goals. I will then build a plan with students that helps them achieve their goals in a way that is empowering and realistic.
I've worked with elementary school, middle school, and high school students as a tutor. I have teaching experience with high school students and counseling experience with middle school students.
