About Claire
I have been a lover of writing and the English language for most of my life. I began tutoring in high school for a local homeschooled child, and spent many years volunteering in schools as a tutor and classroom assistant. I have a Bachelors degree in Religious Studies, with a minor in Music. I went to a small, highly reputable liberal arts college (graduated 1992), where I continued volunteering in elementary schools in my free time.
After graduating from college I was a nanny for three years, and continued volunteering for schools and other local organizations, primarily in Philadelphia and Williamsport.
Currently, I homeschool my daughter and am a freelance writer for a local publication. Although my teaching experience has primarily and historically been focused on children, I own two small businesses and have the opportunity in those ventures to teach classes on various topics, mostly centered around wellness. In addition, I proof and edit the written work of others on a regular basis.
It would be my joy to help you!

I like to spend time during the first session getting to know my student. Where are you from? What’s your education history? What’s your learning style? Having this and other information about you helps me be the best guide I can be. Once we establish a relationship, the work begins! I am flexible and laid back in my style, but challenge my students to stretch beyond what they believe they can do. It’s satisfying to watch someone accomplish more than they thought possible, and that is my goal!
I have had the pleasure of working with a wide variety people, from elementary school students to colleagues and peers.
Find a teacher who has a flexible teaching style. If your teacher is so attached to their own ideas of how learning should happen, it can cause undue stress to a student who has a different learning style. This is true no matter what the teacher’s area of expertise might be. Look for someone who wants to get to know you well enough that they can mold their teaching to fit your needs and style. There is really no right or wrong way to learn and a truly good teacher should know this and be skilled at drawing out the best in each student.
On Earth Day 2018 I had the great joy and privilege to perform with our local community chorus at a benefit concert. Our music this season has been centered around the theme of hope. Music has been used for centuries to heal the heart, support those who suffer and help us all survive in times of adversity and hardship. Our concert was met with deep appreciation, as we shared songs from a variety of traditions - African American spirituals, Native American chants, celebratory songs from the African continent, plus a few modern-day pieces by contemporary choral composers. I feel certain that hearts were healed and hope was shared in the concert hall that day.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is my primary goal in hiring a tutor?
What do I feel I’m good at? Where do I really shine?
What are some areas that I want to improve?
Are there specific subjects that I consistently struggle with and need to focus more time and energy on improving?
Perhaps there are minute aspects of a particular subject that need honing to improve the overall subject?
How do I learn best? (Visual, auditory or tactile learner, or a combination)
What are my study habits?
How do I manage my time?
