About Kate
As the daughter of an elementary school teacher, growing up I spent countless afternoons in her classroom, grading papers and tutoring students after school. From there, I went to JMU, where I became an award-winning scholar of Medieval and Renaissance Literature, Southern Literature, and for my overall merit as a student. I graduated with honors, then pursued a career in book publishing, where I am now.
My enthusiasm for the Language and Literature is positively contagious. When teaching reading comprehension and writing, I choose books for the curriculum based on the individual student's preferences. I specialize in reluctant readers, finding books they'll want to read so learning is no longer a chore. But when the curriculum is already established, I make an effort to connect the reader to the text in the way books are meant to, so they truly understand the subject and the power of literature.
In the Writing Center at JMU, I edited papers from students across various disciplines, teaching them how to write comprehensive theses and keep it as the through-line of their research. And even though I would get nit-picky about grammar, students almost always got As.
I also have professional experience editing fiction and nonfiction creative writing. As an editorial intern at Algonquin, I screened manuscripts and gave productive feedback to authors. In my current role, I'm working with children's book authors to create texts to sell to major publishing houses. I use those professional chops when teaching students how to let their voices shine in creative writing.

I like to first figure out where exactly the student is struggling, and why. I get to the root of the issue, and then try different methods to engage the student in the material. I don't believe learning is a chore -- I believe that with the right kind of engagement, a student can grow to love to learn!

Look for an avid reader -- one who not only reads and edits academic papers, but someone who knows language inside and out by having it be a part of their everyday life.

Kate was super thorough and corrected any mistake I had on my paper. Wording was improved and I was able to obtain a 98% on that paper. Kate goes above and beyond to make sure my paper was nothing but superb. Kate rocks!!!
