TEST TAKING
First, the student takes a full practice test as a diagnostic. Then, we go over the answers together. This gives me an idea of where the student has trouble and how the student is thinking about each question. I give a homework assignment, usually something that can be completed an hour before the next tutoring session.
ESSAY WRITING
I start by talking through the essay prompt with the student and making a bullet list of potential themes based on how the student answers. After we come up with a possible outline, I let the student free write a section (usually the body) of the essay. We then go over the writing together so the student understands why I make certain edits and has an idea of how to resolve them in the next draft. The goal is not only to write one good essay but to develop writing skills that last throughout their undergraduate or graduate studies.
