About Madison
I'm a current graduate student studying speech-language pathology and educational research with an undergraduate degree in linguistics. I have approximately 5 years of experience teaching/tutoring ESL, English, and writing, and I even independently research children's writing development for my graduate-level thesis and for my part-time work as a graduate research assistant. I'm excited to help you and your child learn how to better communicate their ideas so that they can share them with the world!

I typically like to see the student work independently so that I can gauge their performance and their writing process. Additionally, I sometimes offer standardized writing assessments if I think they would be valuable to my planning and data tracking as an instructor.
After seeing how the student works independently and gaining an understanding of their current level of performance, I establish a list of skills that are high need for the student. We'll work on the most challenging skills first or the skills that the student is most struggling with (e.g., subject-verb agreement, English idioms, etc.) and then work our way toward the easiest skills.
When I work toward these harder skills, my approach is the same as it is in my therapy room--I try to give the student multiple opportunities for success and teach an abstract skill with concrete/visual objects before moving on to more difficult environments. For example, when teaching English pronunciation, I may start by teaching the TH sound in isolation, then move to the word level, then sentence, then connected speech (i.e., reading from a passage aloud), then conversation. I increase the contexts of difficulty and hope that the skill will then be generalized outside of the tutoring session.
