I am not a teacher, but a tutor, which to me is a slightly different field. A tutor works specifically with an individual person, focusing on their educational needs and interests; a teacher works with specific needs on a State or Federal level for large groups.

I am a highly-trained former tutor for St Petersburg College in St Petersburg, Florida.

About the lesson

Initially, during the contract phase, I will conduct an over-the-phone interview to assess the needs of the client, followed by a case analysis to ensure a proper time frame and curricula are offered in adequate measure, then finalize a plan of action. Time frames are up to the client and negotiable within a 24 hour period, especially if adjustments or cancellations are required by the client (life happens!) There is no cancellation fee. In person at local libraries is preferred and will limit availability; internet and phone sessions are possible as well. Masks required per Corona Virus standards set by the Public Library facility being used.

I have worked for your average college student, but also Downs Syndrome individuals at the college level, so I have worked with both those who need only a little help to those who need help every step of the way. I currently work at GVRA as an armed security officer, and most of our students are hearing impaired.

Due to my having general or greater experience in many differing fields, my advice is to focus on a tutor or teacher who loves what you are interested in finding assistance in; those individuals will often know all sorts of things about the subject outside of the book (or the box), have an infectious love of the subject matter, and even guide you to others in other fields if they are unable to help you with a topic. Those tutors have your best interests at heart in guiding you along your learning journey.

My most recent event I am most fond of is taking a tour of an area, finding bits of stone and other natural treasures, then showing them to kids who are unfamiliar with geology. I showed them how to easily identify visually what they may be looking at in the field.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Be direct with specific issues you are having in a topic, such as, "I do not know how to identify what the subject is in order to make a summary paragraph for my APA paper." Also, be open and honest about your troubles in a topic; tutoring is a no judgement zone. Is it really that you want to love a topic, but reading from a book bores you? How about a manga version of the topic? Sometimes it can help to look at the subject in a new light. Are you learning impaired or have disabilities which may change your needs? Make certain to specify this as well when contacting a prospective teacher or tutor.
