About Jon-Joseph

I have been doing, studying art since I was child, winning awards in painting, illustration and sculpture. I fell in love with sculpture and stone carving in high school. I then received a BFA in sculpture from Alfred U. and have carved stone for 40 years. I have taken many trips to Italy and studied art and architecture in the Cornell U. Rome program. I have a life size Madonna and Child carving commission at the National Shrine in Washington, DC. I sculpt, paint and draw. I have been teaching sculpture and drawing for 10 years at Washington Studio School and W. Waldorf School. Drawing is always a taught component in sculpture classes. At Waldorf I teach H.S. stone carving & clay modeling. I embrace a world perspective.

I am happy to impart my knowledge from practical experience. It is very satisfying to have a receptive student eager to learn creating a mutual growth experience.

I was selected by professors as a Teacher Assistant for design studio classes at Cornell U. I later began teaching sculpture as a transition from my landscape architecture practice, back to my first passion - art.

Besides a BFA, Sculpture I have a Masters Landscape Architecture and worked in a design office. I also have my own design/build practice since 1996. I also apprenticed with nationally commissioned figure sculptor Ray Kaskey for 2 years. I specialized in mouldmaking for bronze casting.

About the lesson

I have worked with many beginner students who have either not taken sculpture or many drawing classes. In this case I have projects which teach basic art principles (compositon, proportion). If you have work I would welcome seeing it to guage your experience. Also if you have specific ideas to study I would want to know your goals and what you want to accomplish with classes. For sculpture, drawing, painting I always begin with fundamentals, basic concepts and principles. If you want to learn the figure this is one area of my expertise. I teach a process of constructing the figure/head, whether sculpture or drawing. Also I have a hands on approach, showing you directly with your work.

I have worked with beginners, to intermediate levels, with or without art backgrounds. I have had students all ages from pre-teen and up.

I would look at the teacher's work to see if you like it, if there is a discernable skill level. More importantly determine if their teaching style/philosophy is compatible.

I had my first solo exhibition at the Arts Club of Washington from Fall 2020 until July 2021.

Perfect! He is a very nice guy, and very committed to his art. Jon took his time with explaining color theory and brought examples of what he was teaching me. also he left charts of how colors work together.

Perfect! I have taken beginning sculpture classes from Jon-Joseph once a week for over six months, starting with clay reliefs. Jon-Joseph has been very methodical, patient, and hands-on with teaching sculpture. I have benefited a lot in terms of the application of tools and methods, anatomical details, perspective, shadows, and overall approach to sculpting. I would highly recommend one-on-one classes with him. As a result, my sculpting improved significantly in such a short time. I will continue to work with him as there is much more to learn and practice. It is a pleasure and privilege to have the opportunity to work with such an accomplished artist and great teacher.

Jon-Joseph is a an incredible sculptor and teacher. He helped me learn to sculpt a self portrait, use the tools of a sculptor and think in an entirely different way about perspective and how to work on a piece. He is extremely personable and easy to learn from and I really benefitted from my classes with him. I would recommend taking workshops and classes with him.

I typically don’t write reviews, but for this guy I had to. I initially was apprehensive because I hadn’t touched art professionally in a long time. He was very patient and thorough from the very beginning. I will be continuing to receive courses from him going forward, because the transition back in was so easy. He has returned my inspiration.

I liked the way Jon-Joseph taught to look and see the figure pointing out the lines and curves that wait to be discovered. Also, the freedom that was given to explore and experiment.

Jon Joseph is an excellent artist and an inspiring teacher. His classes are challenging however with his support nothing is out of reach. Russo’s method of teaching. When working with clay you can keep adding, or start from a big piece and carve it out. The latter is what he teaches, and it is much more exciting and creative. Also more difficult but, as such, more rewarding. I liked this approach as it is conceptually close to the process of carving from marble.
