Philosophy of Teaching

Jessica Farrell

The pedagogy of teaching art has transformed hundreds of times throughout history. Hopeful students seeking to be artists once apprenticed under masters of the craft gleaming knowledge from their lifelong training and experiences. Historically art was considered to be a way of preserving a moment in time and recording the world around you with the utmost accuracy, but the art world has changed and so should the philosophy of teaching art. Art is no longer held to the same inaccessible and unachievable standards that it once was, as a teacher my main goal is to imprint into every student that they have the ability to create art in their own individualistic way. Instead of only teaching students how to produce artwork and the technical skills that it may require, I will teach them how to think like an artist, to take a closer look at the world around them, and how to create physical objects that will communicate their thoughts and emotions to their audience. Art can surpass the students time spent within academia, it fosters the development and inquiry of learning about ourselves, it stresses the importance of developing creative problem-solving skills and forces the students to engage in a continuous examination of their world.

Just as every artist creates different art every student learns differently, instead of employing a cookie-cutter methodology of teaching my students I try to develop an understanding of what the student excels at and is interested in learning. Art can be an intimidating subject to approach, you're creating something from nothing, to ease this beginning level classes will start with technical training so that the students may develop an assortment of skills (drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor), ceramics, the elements and principles of design, observational and research skills, sculpting, conceptualizing ideas, and other processes) to utilize within their artwork. In addition to hands-on projects and instruction, it is imperative to contextualize the artwork that they are creating by giving lectures on the history, theory, philosophy and other artists’ writings while examining existing art to cultivate critical awareness.

These concepts will also teach them the language and concepts that will be used in group discussions about each other's pieces in the form of group critiques. Within this discussion, the students will not only analyze the elements and principles of design but to also form a didactic conversation where students will vocalize critical connections to the course work and seek to find relationships that the artwork has to broader outside themes. With these introductory classes, I hope to instill within the student's a curiosity and confidence in ideas and process combined with a critical awareness of the context within which the work operates while challenging to push themselves and their ideas farther. My teaching combines encouragement of exploration while providing students the conceptual and technical tools they will need to produce, understand, and improve their work enabling them to more fully consider materials, process, meaning, and message within their artwork.

Accounting for different skill levels and modes of learning is imperative to the success of the individual student. Work is graded more on individual advancement than in comparison between students. Students are often at different conceptual and technical skill levels, the effort and work that they apply to further their artistic ability will be graded rather than their technical skills or capacity to complete a goal. Grading and my enthrallment for teaching is derived from seeing the personal achievements each student makes throughout the time that they are in the classroom. Participation within the classroom and creative effort put forth in projects is the basis of my grading methodology instead of a set guideline to grade work by. Weekly readings on relevant topics and participation in discussions about them will also contribute to the grade given to each student.

I am an advocate for equality in learning and believe there is value in developing a model for Progressive Education in arts education because students learn from their active participation in social, political and economic conversations within their artwork. Respect for diversity is essential to learning and each individual should be recognized for their own abilities, interests, ideas, and needs based on their race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, region, sexual orientation and other forms of identity. As an artist as well as a teacher, I view teaching as an intrinsic part of my artistic practice. The two are not separable, enriching and advancing each other by expanding my understanding of one another. My life long passion that I hold dearer than anything else is the ability to express my creativity through my artistic practice and my main goal in teaching is to develop this ability in each of my students so that they may see an artist within themselves.
