About Saga

My background as an Art Therapist has shaped my teaching over the years to be more holistically focused. I enjoy helping my students dig even deeper into the creative healing process. Wild Wonder is what we discover when art becomes more about joyful expression & experience and less about concepts of perfection.

I founded a nonprofit creative arts & learning center in Belize at age 23. Until, that point I hadn't taught before. The center I started focused on community education & beautification. The center operated as a lending library during the day and in the evenings as a safe fun space for “at risk” youth. I worked with local children that were deemed "walkabouts" because they came from homes with absent parent(s) allowed them to wandered the streets. I would assist with homework and weekly hot meals. Some evening we would create music or art. A community slowly formed and we started to go and beautify less desirable areas of the town with large painted murals or sometimes just a fresh coat of paint. I hosted & organized large groups from the US for cross-cultural mission based trips focused on local need projects. I worked closely with the community to raise over 30% of our budget locally. This model ended up being extremely sustainable and required very little overhead. I made yearly trips to the United States to raise funding for special projects and continued education for our students.

Saga grew up in a world of wonder and color. Her father Woody is an avid painter and moved his family to picturesque spots through out the Pacific North West. He raised his children to be creative above all else and follow their hearts even when that meant being different. Saga was encouraged to travel and at 16 was given the opportunity to visit Italy. The Art of the Masters that she experience in Florence, Rome, and Venice opened up a whole new world for her. Saga went on get her Associates in Theater Arts and continued on to become a licensed Freelance Makeup Artist. She also holds a certificate in Interior Design. At the age of 22 Saga moved to Central America where she lived for 4 years and founded an Art based Nonprofit called "Da Wata Fountin". This unique organization continued for seven years (with a National board of directors) to feed, clothe, and inspire young and old to create and beautify their community.

After returning to the States Saga started working as a teacher for "The Children's Rainforest". A wonderful program that works in the public schools teaching clay & mosaic work to "at risk" third graders. Saga has developed curriculum for many nonprofit art programs and now would like to share her curriculum and passion for teaching through AMP. AMP stands for Art, Music, & Play and is a collaborative organization of Creative Arts teachers who want to provide a innovative art based curriculum for young people. Saga works in visual media artist and costume designer in her home studio space. She loves to re-use forgotten items and is addicted to art books, ribbons, and old photos.

About the lesson

I work with my students to accomplish long term visual arts projects that focus on developing skills through scaffolded steps for ultimate success.

I work with families, schools and community public art projects to create murals for individual/group positive identity development.

I work with individuals to discover emotional blockages through the creative process. I use art as a safe conversation for students hoping to release stuck traumas in a more playful way.

I've worked with children of all ages and adults, "at risk" youth, adult's with developmental disabilties and in trauma recovery therapy.

Details

I charge on a sliding scale by the hour ($60 - $80) but also offer discounts to students taking weekly classes or wanting to work on long term projects. I work with my students to develop a plan that helps them create and focus on their goals and have a clear idea of how many classes that might entail.
