About John

I seek to have students learn by gaining a deeper understanding of the subject matter. My desire is for a student to be asking questions, testing their ideas, and purposefully finding the right processes to assist with their analysis. To grow and attain success, students must give considerable rigor to find the deeper meaning to their work, especially in art. I meet this challenge by encouraging students to problem solve through research, following the proper processes, and face uncertainty with curiosity and a desire to understand.

As an example of my belief in the power of why, consider the example of teaching computer software to students. One way of teaching is to simply teach the processes of the specific computer software and assume that the student may someday need the processes to succeed in the workplace. In my experiences, the software itself can prove to be finite, so to only teach to the processes needed to use the software is limiting. I find that when the student understands the purpose of the software and the purpose of the processes you are teaching, you give a student ability to transcend.

I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. I get sheer joy from drawing, sketching, and cartooning. I enjoy it so much that I have made it my career. First, as a professional artist/designer/animator in the entertainment industry, and then as a professor/instructor. I really find teaching art to others quite gratifying. I have a keen desire to generate curiosity and enthusiasm for art, design and animation for those who want to utilize these to create powerful and meaningful messages to the public. I have experienced first hand the challenges and advantages to create work that gives an audience a unique, yet deeply significant experience. I challenge students to find their own unique message to base their work from, then use it as a guide to create influential work.

I have been a working professional in over 20 years. I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Motion Arts that I obtained in 2014 from Southwest University of Visual Arts, in Tucson, Arizona. My bachelor's degree was in Graphic Communications from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. Most of my expertise in digital art/design/animation software came from on-the-job training. About the lesson

I believe that developing a trusting relationship between student and professor is important, from the first day. I set the standards of proper conduct and behavior up front. I believe that practicing civility during a lesson serves as a habit that the student will carry forth into the workplace and/or into their own personal lives. I reveal my high expectations and make sure that the standards are met throughout the semester. I ensure that each lesson meets the class objective and create questions that cause students to stay engaged to the subject matter. Purposeful planning provides successful learning. I also believe in providing a safe learning environment and developing a rapport with the students.Within each lesson I supplement humor and reflection by sharing my own experiences as an artist and professional in the workplace. I care very much for each student who trusts in me to lead them to success. I take the time to engage with each student as an individual, so that I can guide them and encourage their problem solving abilities.
