About Jo

Hi! I’m “Miss Jo”, owner and instructor at Artists in Bloom.

Why I teach:

I teach art BECAUSE of my students. When I see a 6-year-old’s face light up in pride at their accomplishment, it becomes my accomplishment. Nurturing and guiding a shy perfectionistic 8-year-old until she blossoms into a brilliantly talented, confident teenager is indescribable. When an 11-year-old learns techniques that I didn't learn until college, I am thrilled at the possibilities that open up for him. When a 14-year-old begins creating college level work... you can image! Teaching adults is equally rewarding... Helping creatives step back into their art is a great feeling.

How I teach:

I provide quality art instruction to children and adults with age appropriate lessons that build skills & creativity in a fun and supportive environment. Gentle, encouraging instruction fosters self-confidence.

Youth Students ages 6 to 10 are led in a step by step, “Draw what I Draw” format, with occasional self-directed projects such as creating self-portraits. Students are introduced to basic art terminology, using different mediums, and learn color mixing. Paint, pastel, & graphite projects allow kids explore art concepts in a fun and rewarding way.

Adult and teen students work on projects of their own choosing in various mediums. I assist students in developing skills in the areas of proportion, color, media application, composition, line quality, light, shadow, and contrast. Each student works at their own pace, receiving help when needed balanced with complete freedom to explore their own ideas, talent, and techniques.

I have ongoing weekly classes through Parks and Recreation in Spotsylvania and Culpeper Counties, as well as occasional programs in Orange. Private lessons are also available. I have several students who have been with me for four or more years, and one incredibly talented student who I have been teaching for 9 years.

I sprinkle life lessons in with the art lessons...

· Be open to new experiences.

· Life doesn't always give you what you want, so learn to make the most of what you are given.

· The only failure is the failure to try. Everything else is practice.

· How wonderful and unique we all are, just like our artwork.

· Don't let fear hold you back and limit your opportunities.

This is my calling. This is what I am meant to do with my life. I love working with these bright, talented, thoughtful students. I am pursuing my dreams as an artist and continuing to do what I love most... being "Miss Jo" to my kiddos, and fostering a sense of accomplishment to my adult students.

Background:

I began teaching art in 2010 with The Creative Side. I have had opportunity to teach many, many amazing students in Fredericksburg, Stafford, King George, Spotsylvania, and Louisa counties. When The Creative Side closed it’s doors in 2018, I opened Artists in Bloom because I couldn’t bear to part with my students, they bring so much joy into my life.

I hold a B.F.A. in Graphic Design and Illustration from The Savannah College of Art and Design.

For most of my career, I have worked in Graphic Design. I am currently expanding my teaching and paint party business and am focusing energy on creating several new paintings this year, as well as taking commissions for pet portraits. I have ambitions of writing and illustrating children’s books.

About the lesson

How I begin teaching a new student can vary depending on many factors.

Their age and past experience with creating art.

The setting, personal goals & personalities – are these private lessons, a public group setting such as classes through Parks and Recreation, or a home school group? Does a student have a driving passion to learn a particular subject or medium? Do they simply love the creative process no matter what they are working on? Are they shy or highly social?

Regardless of the setting, I give each student as much individual guidance and encouragement as possible. Lessons are flexible and scalable to meet the abilities and needs of each individual. Allowing each artist to move at their own pace and interest level is very important and keeps them engaged and learning. I take having fun very seriously. If younger students aren’t smiling and laughing and loving what they are doing, then I am not doing my job. Teen and Adult students tend to “get in the zone” and are often focused on just one type of art or medium. I encourage this, but also like to “shake things up a bit” by requesting that they try something different, something new, something that falls outside of their comfort zone.
