About Maria

I am an accomplished painter, exhibiting primarily in NYC and upstate NY. Images of mine and my student work can be seen on my website mariakatzman.com.

I received my MFA from Yale University. For the past 20 years, I have taught both adults and children in a variety of private school settings and cultural institutions. Additionally, I have taught private classes from my studio, and after-school classes for elementary and middle school students meeting once a week in a museum setting.

I am passionate about what I do for a living - as an artist and a teacher, I help students learn important skills and guide them to draw and paint what they see.

Recently for the 2017-2018 academic year, I taught at the American Community School in Athens Greece; teaching middle school students Drawing and Painting, as well as an Art and Design course to 8th grade students. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the student work. Teaching is the art of being an inspiration to your students and being excited by their discoveries, as well as your own. I can facilitate those discoveries and teach important skills, to help students reach their goals of creating and making art!

I got started teaching for Studio in a School. A program that places artists into the NYC school system. It was a great way to experiment and learn many techniques.

Since then, I have taught mostly in Private Schools in NYC- all ages, and adults too. Teaching adult classes at Adelphi University, The 92nd Street Y, (where I taught a drawing class for 10 years) and I also taught painting lessons out of my studio for two years. I held 4 classes a week, and had a total of 12 students!

Most recently I taught middle school art in Athens, Greece.

I received my BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, between my undergraduate and graduate school years, I was awarded a prestigious fellowship to Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and I received my MFA from Yale University. I have participated in several painting residencies throughout the United States, and Europe, and I have exhibited my paintings throughout the United States. Teaching children and adults for more than 20 years, I was a visiting artist at Adelphi University, where I taught Color Theory to graduate students. A link to my resume: (concealed information)

About the lesson

Teaching one-on-one is quite different from a classroom setting where I have upwards of 20 students at a time. That said; what is similar is discussing goals with my students; and what each person would like to create and learn. What a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with a skilled educator and artist! What is so rewarding for me is helping you attain your goals.

I also want to understand your skill level; and review the basics, (which depends on a students experience.) I start with simple exercises, and through discussion, demonstrations and guiding you, I am able to ascertain and make suggestions for your personal goals and vision.

A huge range of levels, experiences, and ages.

To explain to the teacher what you would like to get out of the class and for the teacher and student to come up with a plan. To look at the teachers work, and to ask questions!

I love to travel, and so in my summers, I travel and paint. This summer I was in the Greek Islands painting and exploring the landscape. I was able to visit ancient sites as well.
