About James

I have taught art classes, using a variety of mediums, to hundreds of students a year for 40 years in Jefferson; I have the experience to make any student's skills eyepopping!

I paint and draw myself and taught all those years because I enjoyed watching students explore that opportunity within themselves. It was almost like magic.

I taught with parks and recreation departments before starting my career with public schools. As Picasso said, "All artists teach what they know in every work they create."

I have a BFA in drawing and painting, a MAEd in teaching and a SPEd (specialist in education), all from the University of Georgia. I taught well over 7,000 students art in Jefferson City Schools for 40 years, including AP art where the average score was 4.4 out of a top score of 5

About the lesson

I start with the concept that the student has little or no experience and I begin with the skill sets that they have had since their earliest childhood. I teach the student to draw, and draw well before moving to higher orders. If the student is comfortable with their drawing abilities, then we will move into the next levels of painting, drawing, sculpture, composition, and design.

I have taught students from the age of 8 to 80, with varied backgrounds and abilities, interests and talents.

Be sure that the passion for the subject is equal to their skills to be able to deliver the process of creation: process is greater than product

I work in my studio every day to the point that it creates the passion of creation and living in my life, that I beleive every person should have the opportunity to enjoy in their lives.
