About Sandra

I have been teaching students in a number of countries for many years. I have learned that my students are excited to learn but also want to have fun and to be inspired. Through this website I will teach a series of eight classes on the Fundamentals of Art for intermediate and experienced artists. I will not teach you how to paint a tree or to paint like Van Gogh. I will teach you to find your artistic voice that is unique and completely your own.

This course will meet online once a week on Monday evenings from 6 to 7:30 pm. Each class will have a lesson and studio component. The lessons will focus on the fundamentals of art- color, line, tone, composition, shadows, perspective, and negative space. Each class will have a few minutes of a PowerPoint presentation, studio art session and critique afterwards. Students will be expected to have worked with paint , collage, or drawing supplies and to paint outside of class.

I have a master's in painting from Kendall College of Art and Design, where I received the Excellence in Painting Award. I have taught art in India, Thailand, Sweden, and in Western Michigan. My work is now shown at Art Cats Gallery in Muskegon, Carlyn & Co in Grand Haven, and Fernwood Gallery, in Michigan.

I was asked to teach art at a school in India for three months. I then started teaching other children and adults in other countries, eventually teaching children in after school programs through Kendall College of Art and Design's Continuing learning. I also taught at The Academy of Art and Design for a year. During these last few pandemic years I have taught individuals and group classes online. I taught a number of classes with a Chinese school online as well.

i have a master's and an undergraduate degree in painting from Kendall College of Art and Design. I received the Portfolio Prize for both degrees and the Excellence in Painting Award for my undergraduate degree. Before attending Kendall I took painting and drawing classes at Hope College.

Over the years I have taught painting to individuals and group classes in India, Thailand, Sweden and Western Michigan. I am a practicing artist with exhibitions in the U.S. As well as India, Sweden, Denmark, and China. I have also had artist residences in China, Australia, Italy, and Ireland. I love to travel to museums and gain inspiration from other countries nature and people.

About the lesson

The goal is to find joy any your own voice in art. To do this, we must start with some basic understandings.

I like to start with the basic components of art. For instance we make a color wheel and color bars to learn how to make any color in the world. We make studies in black and white to learn about contrast, and tone. We move on to value, line and other topics from simple still lifes.

Both children and adults. I have worked with orphans who have never picked up a paintbrush. I have worked with individuals and small class sizes. Once I did a workshop with 100 children at once. I have taught people who have claimed that they were incapable of learning art. If you want to learn, I can teach you. I am now only accepting students who are at an intermediate level or above. This means that they are already painting regularly on their own and are comfortable with their chosen medium. Students do not need to be particularly "good" at what their art is, only need to show committment to staying involved in art.

Come To class with a sense of fun and experimentation. However, to really become good at art you must also learn the basic components and building blocks of creating art. Without these your art will not get better but remain superficial and primitive. Be committed. Learning art is a lifetime of joy, but it requires you to be alone with your art supplies as well. Do art between classes. Listen to honest critique and you will be amazed at how much your work will improve over time.

I have been to China on three different occasions. The first time I had a solo exhibition at the Inner Mongolia Art Museum. We traveled before and after the exhibition so it was a great experience and I learned so much about Chinese art and culture.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it is helpful for drawing and painting students to bring some of their own art so that I can understand where they are in their art journey.

Details

My online Zoom classes are on Monday nights from 7:30-9. There are eight classes in the course. If you miss one, you may take it at another time. The full course will be $240 paid at the beginning of the class. When the course is finished we can continue with other subjects.
