About Joelle

Hey There!

Hope you all are doing well. I am an established commission based painter and draftsperson, and I currently teach adults at Alvarado Adult School in West Contra Costa County. I am thrilled to teach you not only very basic fundamental techniques of paint mixing, composition etc, but we will review other contemporary and historical artists in the context of your own work, and to then answer all questions you have that are broadly associated with art practice, as it will ALL solidify and deepen your approach to the act of creating. I love to make art, but my path as art teacher really became exciting when I was approached at an art fair and asked by a stranger what my secrets were and if i could share/teach any of them. This is when I realized I love sharing any insights I can with my students, and that some really are hungry for that knowledge. I love to help, and am here for YOU to answer any questions you feel confused about in the process of creating.

I was advised to teach by my professor because she saw it as a calling for me.

I've assistant taught intermediate drawing for Clarity Haynes at Brooklyn College who is now a major artist based in NYC. I have assistant taught Painting levels 1, 2, and 3 for Diana Horowitz and have led my own classroom of young children in Harlem at a school that raised millions off of the art we produced in my classroom in an annual auction held at the school.

About the lesson

In working with a new student, it's critical (and exciting!) to breakdown their relationship to art so we can become clear on what to target in our time together. The best part of working individually is that we have the opportunity to hone in to specific challenges that the student is haivng or has had in the past. It's a good idea to tackle this right away to maximize our time together. I am really big on studying other artists together so we can constructively figure out where your tastes lie, because in that, you will find your own voice. Of course, brush size, palette mixing and all of this will be part of the conversation as well.

I know you came here for a reason, but really hone in on specific areas of insecurity or places where you feel you want to grow.

As with any individual session, whether it be therapy or advising or what have you, the more clear you are coming into this, the more you will get out of this and it will really bring our process working together to the next level.

Details

50/hour is standard as it is inclusive of typical, academic based teaching. I offer a two hour minimum, contractually, and we can decide on the amount of sessions together.
