About Kenneth

Dr. Brady has earned degrees in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University. After postdoctoral studies into mechanisms of cellular signal transduction, he worked with a team of chemists, microbiologists and immunologists to develop small-molecule drugs to treat rheumatoid arthritis. He was responsible for assaying test compounds and assessing their potency and mechanism of action against the target enzyme caspase-1.

During his scientific career, Dr. Brady mastered several computer languages and wrote custom software to collect, organize and analyze laboratory data. After relocating to New York City in 2000, this gave him the skillset needed to find rewarding work as a software engineer.

By 2014, the programming work began to feel repetitive, so he took time out to reflect, and in 2015 he began tutoring part-time at the New York Math Academy. In 2017 he found full-time work as a Technical Instructor with Perscholas where he was responsible for curriculum development and class-room teaching. Teaching was very rewarding, but after several years the daily commute from Staten Island to the Bronx was taking too much time, and he decided that he had gained enough professional experience to start his own tutoring service right in his own neighborhood.

After working in software for 14 years, the work began to feel repetitive, so I took time out to reflect on a new direction. In my previous professions I'd always enjoyed opportunities to serve as a mentor, so I began looking for opportunities to teach.

I've earned degrees in biology from world-class universities and worked as a professional biochemist authoring 18 scientific papers (9 as first author).

I've worked for 14 years as a "full-stack" software engineer.

I've worked for 4 years as a professional educator responsible for curriculum development and classroom teaching.

About the lesson

When I first meet a student, instead of jumping right into the subject matter I prefer to spend some time chatting and getting to know each other. I like to know a bit about my students' extra-curricular interests and family life, and also to let students ask questions about me and my background.

At the New York Math Academy I worked with students in 7th-12th grades. At Perscholas I worked mostly with young adults.

When teaching science and mathematics, I am most comfortable working with 7th - 12th grades. When teaching computer programming I can work with any age.

As a biologist, I have deep reverence for the diversity of life on this planet, and as a scientist I've been keenly aware of the threats of over-population and climate change for decades.

It makes me hopeful to see the younger generation begin to foster awareness of these problems through actions like the Global Climate Strike.
