About Simon
I’m an experienced teacher and academic mentor specialising in Philosophy, Politics, History, and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) across IB and A Level, alongside IB Extended Essay support and academic skills coaching for undergraduate humanities students. My work focuses on helping students develop clarity of thought, strong academic writing, and confidence in working with complex ideas. I support students not only with course content and assessment requirements, but also with the underlying skills that lead to success across essay-based subjects, including argument structure, evaluation, use of evidence, and academic voice. My teaching style is calm, structured, and dialogic. Lessons are designed around discussion, questioning, and active work on ideas or written material rather than passive note-taking. I typically combine short explanations with guided conversation and targeted feedback, so students leave sessions with a clearer understanding of what they need to do next and how to improve over time. I have extensive experience working with IB and UK examination frameworks, including IB Philosophy, Global Politics, History, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Extended Essays, as well as A Level specifications in Philosophy, Politics, and History. This allows me to tailor support closely to what examiners and assessors are looking for, while still encouraging independent thinking and depth of understanding. Alongside my teaching, I remain actively engaged in academic and professional work in education and philosophy, including writing and publication. This helps ensure my subject knowledge stays current and allows me to support students who are preparing for the transition to university-level study, where expectations around reading, writing, and argument become more demanding. I work most effectively with secondary and post-16 students, as well as undergraduate humanities students, who want to develop their thinking and writing in a serious, supportive setting. I usually work with students on an ongoing basis, helping them build confidence, rigour, and strong academic habits over time, while also supporting clear progress and strong academic outcomes.

My approach to tutoring is structured, dialogic, and focused on helping students think clearly and express ideas with precision. Lessons are built around careful questioning, discussion, and targeted work on writing or concepts, rather than passive note-taking. I aim to help students understand not just what to say, but how to construct strong arguments, use evidence effectively, and engage critically with ideas. Sessions usually combine short explanations with active conversation and guided work on essays, plans, or key concepts. Where appropriate, I provide direct feedback on written work and help students develop clear next steps, so progress continues between lessons. I adapt my approach to the needs of each student, balancing challenge and support to build confidence as well as competence. Lessons typically last 60 minutes, which allows enough time for meaningful discussion and focused academic work, though longer sessions can be useful for Extended Essay or university-level writing support. I have extensive experience teaching and mentoring students across IB and A Level Philosophy, Politics, History, and Theory of Knowledge (TOK), as well as supporting IB Extended Essays and undergraduate humanities academic skills. I’m very familiar with IB assessment criteria, essay-based examination requirements, and the expectations placed on students at university level. My lessons are best suited to secondary and post-16 students, as well as undergraduate humanities students, who want to strengthen their thinking, writing, and academic confidence. I usually work with students on an ongoing basis, supporting both deep understanding and strong academic outcomes over time.

Perfect! My son really enjoyed his lessons with Simon and found them very helpful and interesting. He’s felt far more confident and capable going into his A Level exams and re-found his joy of the subject.
